Ron Paul: Manhunt for Bombers Scarier Than Attacks.

Former Rep. Ron Paul said the law enforcement that swarmed around Boston in the days following the marathon bombings was scarier than the actual terrorist attack.

“The Boston bombing provided the opportunity for the government to turn what should have been a police investigation into a military-style occupation of an American city,” he said on the Lew Rockwell website, Politico reported. “This unprecedented move should frighten us as much or more than the attack itself.”

The terror attacks on April 15 in Boston killed three and injured 264.

Mr. Paul, a former libertarian political candidate who served in Congress as a member of the Republican Party, said the door-to-door searches police conducted in Watertown for the bombing suspects were particularly alarming.

They reminded of a “military coup in a far off banana republic,” he said, Politico reported. “Force lockdown of a city. Militarized police riding tanks in the streets. Door-to-door armed searches without warrant. Families thrown out of their homes at gunpoint to be searched without probable cause. Businesses forced to close. Transport shut down.”

Mr. Paul reminded the surviving suspect, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was ultimately discovered by a civilian, and not due to police crackdown, Politico reported.

“He was discovered by a private citizen, who then placed a call to the police,” he said. “And he was identified not by government surveillance cameras, but by private citizens who willingly shared their photographs with the police.”

I disagree with Paul's hyperbolic statement about what was more terrifying, but I agree cops should not have been searching the houses unless they had permission or a warrant.

Not to mention, that comment is pretty damn insensitive to the victims and victim's families of the attack. Maybe Paul buys into the theories that it was all staged.

The searches occurred only after the police asked and received permission from homeowners. It's not as though they were kicking down doors and storming into people's homes.

A warrant is only required if the police are refused permission to enter. And I have to read or hear of any homes that were searched against the wishes of the homeowner.

More Ron Paul idiocy:

"I've been told not to talk, but these stooges don't scare me. Threats or no threats, I've laid bare the coming race war in our big cities. The federal-homosexual cover-up on AIDS (my training as a physician helps me see through this one)."
Direct mail ad promoting Paul's newsletters, written from Paul's perspective, 1993

"Whether [the 1993 World Trade Center bombing] was a setup by the Israeli Mossad, as a Jewish friend of mine suspects, or was truly a retaliation by the Islamic fundamentalists, matters little." The New York Bombing, 1993.

"[Martin Luther king Jr.] the FBI files reveal, was not only a world-class adulterer, he also seduced underage girls and boys.... And we are supposed to honor this 'Christian minister', and lying socialist satyr with a holiday that puts him on a par with George Washington." -- December 1990.

His mouth has become a pressure cooker filled with shards of bullshit. Hope libertarians distance themselves.

that last point is absurd. had the area not been on lockdown the suspect likely would never have been stuck in the same spot for that citizen to notice. his logic fails.

It's easy to say stuff like this when you represented a district that would dead last in the "Terrorists Guide To Cool Places To Blow Yourself Up In" My cousin and his wife lived though it and while they were not giant fans of the soldiers guarding the subway stops, they understood the need and felt it was a good thing, not a bad one.

Of course, if a bunch of Massholes decided to grab their guns and go on a door to door, and managed to shoot the guy who turned out to be unarmed and seriously wounded, that would be ordinary citizens using their Second Amendment Rights or whatever.

Speaking of which.... does Joe Homeowner who found the kid get a new boat out of the deal?

After all, if the Boston Transit cops can afford armored personnel carriers and all the weaponry we saw on display, they can surely spring to have the guy's boat replaced....

They shot the boat first with rubber bullets, and second with flashbangs. Again; police scanner over news coverage. Will straighten things out every time.
