Did the Panthers hire the wrong guy?

Best Answer Zod, 20 September 2013 - 07:19 AM

The Panthers picked the least foul smelling turd.

The question is... why are we looking at turds?

After doing some researching for head coaching related threads in early 2011, I was reminded that the only guys we sought contact with were Greg Manusky, Perry Fewell, Rob Ryan, and of course, ol' tree face Ron. All NFL defensive coordinators. Worst part is Ron probably was the best candidate out of all of them. In January the next time we look for a head coach, I hope JR doesn't order the same lame, narrow-minded approach, because being stubbornly closed-minded in thinking only NFL DCs can lead you to success didn't work then. So the answer to that question is no, we probably didn't hire the wrong guy, and that's the sad part, because Jerry's so out of touch with what's working in the NFL he probably doesn't even know 3/4ths of the names of other prominent HC candidates that aren't DCs.

Oh and here's a sample of my state of mind after hiring Ron at the time:

i like our coaching personnel better than i like SF's

Rivera without a doubt was the best hire out of that group of candidates.

in fairness to yourself i think everyone thought we had a great line up of coaches at the time, especially defensively.

Rivera had led some great D's, McDermott was a bright young prodigy and is the only one who hasn't bombed his career here, and Meeks had done alright coordinating given the talent level on our D the past season and was now the Secondary coach. Chud had worked with a good offense in SD.

But it's just more evidence for Jerry that assembling defensive coaches is not some awesome secret success recipe

If Rivera is fired, they'll probably bring in Fewell or someone like that and this whole process will start back over.

If we hire another defensive coordinator with no head coaching experience at all, I'm going to flip the hell out.

I'd like to think Perry Fewell wouldn't actually be a serious candidate and we're just joshing, but in reality this January it could very well be him, Mike Zimmer, and 2 defensive assistants we've never heard of. Same owner, same bad football

I'll be right there with you.

Hell, most fans in NY want the guy fired as DC.

Won't Gettleman have some say as to who we interview? I have a feeling JR trusts Gettleman. So hopefully he knows what he is doing.

JR, seeing the fanbase's interest in David Shaw but refusing to accept that such a radical notion could be successful, hires Perry Fewell and attempts to convince the fanbase that it is in fact Shaw.

Jerry Richardson still thinks the NFL is the same as it was 50 years ago.

You have reached the phone of Jerry Richardson.  I'm sorry, but I'm not in right now and won't be again during my earthly stay.  Please direct all correspondence to Danny Morrison.  Thanks and bologna can't kite through yellow.  My be beach cool swimming.

Yes we were, but to be fair we didn't know that at the time. This was just as the offensive explosion was about to happen. There was no way to know the landscape of the NFL was about to change. I don't remember anyone here calling to hire an offensive guru in 2010.
