The problem isn't the position we hired from.  The problem is the guy we hired.

Add in that the guy who hired him wasn't really a football guy.  The guy doing the hiring next time most definitely is.

That may be so but if we were to hire another DC or defensive minded coordinator I would only feel better if we got a really good OC to go with him.

I've been touting Mike Zimmer with Hue Jackson or Ken Zampese as an OC.

Whichever side of the ball we hire the head coach from, we need a very strong complementary guy on the opposite side.

Not really.

He's only been coaching in the NFL for eight years (only eleven years overall).

Over guys like Tom Clements who have 20 plus years of real NFL coaching under their belts? No :(

How many years of real NFL coaching does Rivera have compared to Jim Harbaugh?

I'd be cool with Hue Jackson but what's up with Zampese?

Harbaugh played for 13 years, and he played quarterback.

NFL experience isn't a guarantee of success, but Gase doesn't have anything close to a resume' that says 'head coach'.

Bring in Gene Chizik in some assistant's role to help Cam?

Just a thought

His dad was Norv Turner's mentor, and he's the main guy in the development of Andy Dalton.

He was actually up for an OC interview here a few years back before Fox went gaga for Jeff Davidson.

Add Rivera's 8 years of football career too then.

Convo ends here: "NFL experience isn't a guarantee of success". You answered your own question.

I'd love to have Mike Zimmer.  He's a guy that a player will bust their ass for.  That type of leadership is severely lacking here.

Aaaahhh... no.  Using that logic you could justify hiring a successful high school coach.

Rivera had 14 years of NFL coaching experience, and success, before taking a head coaching job.  He had earned the shot.  He just wasn't good enough when he got it.

His failure really does nothing whatsoever to bolster the notion that Adam gase deserves a head coaching shot.

Look up clips of him from 'Hard Knocks'.

Like I said, "quirky" (and some would say that's kind).

Hasn't he already been turning down inquiries from pro teams though?

I think he wants to go back to the NFL, but I'm not 100% and you never know with penn state, that's one of the greatest head coaching jobs out there, although I know he never vehemently denied the question when asked about it so there's hope.

I'm really hoping for Tom Clements.
