Seahawks Release Sidney Rice

Person suggested this today in the Observer.  I think he reads the Huddle for ideas. Still, I would rather see my reporters, especially the ones who scan Twitter for news, report facts or substantiate their suspicions with facts and sources.  Person's reason?

1. Because Panther fans want the team to sign local players

2. Rice lives in South Carolina

THEREFORE:  The Panthers need to sign Rice.

Pure, unbridled journalism.

Person covered Rice during his time at South Carolina and therefore knows him professionally. There's a decent chance that if Person is writing it then he may have received indications of interest from Rice's side (off the record, of course).

That being said, I highly doubt Gettleman gives two craps about signing local players. But I see people posting all the time about how Nicks should want to be a Panther because he grew up in Charlotte. The same probably goes for Rice, who grew up in Gaffney.

A healthy Rice would be a pretty awesome pick up.  Especially pairing him with Smitty, Olsen, a top rookie, and (hopefully) Ginn.

QUESTION:  If players are released do teams still have to wait until March 11th to go after them?  I know March 11th is when FA begins, I'm not sure how waived players are classified since they were still under contract.

If I remember correctly, NO.  Teams don't have to wait if they are released before the FA period starts.  As was the case with guys like Delmas from Detroit, as he's been visiting with other teams ever since.  They are free to sign elsewhere, but I get the feeling that most will wait until the actual FA period to really gauge market value.

I know I read an interview from Nicks that was given a couple of days before the SB where he specifically stated that, for all of the obvious reasons, he thought he would be a good fit for the Panthers. Rice may feel similar. & since both have won Rings w/ other teams they'd probably love to have a hand in helping their home team get win their first. Both injury concerns but Nicks has proven he can still be productive while hurt. Not so much in Rice's case, however, he would be cheaper.

Both have had issues staying healthy. Nicks has 3 TDs in 2 years. Rice has 10 in the same time frame. with the cap space we have Rice should be cheaper.

Sidney Rice hasn't played a full season since 2012, and even before that in 2011 he was still fighting through a hip injury that plagued him when he was with the Vikings. In 2013,he tore his ACL,so, now he's a guy coming off of an ACL injury who is in the supposed prime of his career, but with no way of knowing if he'll ever be able to play through those years. Again, if he could stay healthy, and if this ACL injury hasn't ruined his talents, he'd be a nice second or third receiver on a team. I'd take a one year flyer on him, but that's probably it.
