re: the article, i remember a few years back going back and forth with someone in here who was saying that smokescreens were basically a myth and that no real professional teams would ever use or need to use misinformation to operate, esp. if they did their job right and if they did that they couldn't imagine it actually working and saw it as essentially bush league stuff. i thought it was obvious that they would do it, but went and found quite a lot of examples of teams (including the panthers) talking about how they used smokescreens, esp. for the draft and free agency.
it was almost surprising how prolific it is throughout professional sports and it's one of those things that if it didn't have an effect on their ability to reach their goal, it wouldn't be utilized so much.
