Anonymous offensive assistant coach on Panthers D

23 October 2014 - 12:55 PM

I came across an article from Alex Marves on foxsports.com in which he discusses the defensive failures of the NFC South drawing on input from an anonymous offensive assistant coach that has played against some of the teams in our division. There's not much on the Panthers here, but what else is there to read today? ...

"Carolina's problem is they over-pursue everything and give up big plays," the assistant coach told FOX Sports. "The linebackers are over-active. Carolina stops most plays but the big plays are killing them. They are feast or famine."

Honestly, I'm not sure how accurate this assessment is. Have we "stopped most plays" recently? I guess it's sort of true with regards to our run defense, but not our passing defense. We've been giving up a lot of methodical drives too, haven't we?

The Most Startling Fact About the Blowouts

20 October 2014 - 05:00 PM

Everybody knows that we've had our butts whipped in 3 out of 7 games, but here's the scariest thing to me about the blowouts: we are getting spanked even without turning the ball over. When I watch other teams get blown out in the NFL, it's almost always in part because they turn the ball over; they give up a quick pick-6, fumble in the other team's redzone, etc. In such cases, it's common to feel like the team is experiencing some bad luck in addition to playing poorly. But not so with these panthers:

vs Steelers: Down 23-6 with 2:31 left in the 3rd quarter after only one turnover (early 3rd qtr. Newton sack/fumble).

vs Ravens: Down 35-10 with 11:34 left in the 4th with ZERO turnovers (unbelievable!).

vs Packers: Down 35-3 with 10:28 to go in the 3rd quarter with ZERO turnovers (Are you kidding me?)

This is truly startling.

WR Stat Tracker

15 October 2014 - 06:28 PM

UPDATED THROUGH WEEK 12

Developments:

  • Big games by both Smith and Lafell this week. I'd say the release of Steve Smith is now indefensible, and I used to defend it.
  • Edit: In case you didn't notice, Smith leads the group in receptions and yards per reception. And he's not even the clear-cut #1 receiver on his team. It sure would be nice to have him as our "#2."
  • Cotchery caught just as many TDs on the bye week as has every other week.post-12988-0-89413500-1416938389.png

--------------------

I've been thinking it would be nice to have a go-to thread for comparing WR stats of the players we let go, those we acquired, and those that many huddlers thought we should have acquired in the offseason. I plan to update these stats weekly.

Please remind me of any other players besides Nicks that were coveted on the huddle. Also, let me know if you are aware of a site that keeps track of 3rd down conversions.

  • Except for targets, which are obtained from espn.com

Panthers fans taking over in Hawaii?

26 September 2014 - 12:08 PM

Here's a map from Dick's Sporting Goods that shows most popular 2014 jersey sales by state. What's the deal with Hawaii? Didn't they hear that we cut Pilares?

What did you think of Ealy?

14 September 2014 - 09:46 PM

Just wondering what you guys thought of Ealy's performance today. I wasn't watching him very closely, but saw him get knocked back pretty bad on a stunt. Notice anything positive?
