#3293046 The genius that is the Gettleman 2014 draft

you have a typo.

#3292929 This whole drafting the best player available talk around here is ridiculous

Posted by MedellinHeel on 20 March 2015 - 08:08 PM

We had the same discussion last year and I'm sure we'll have the same discussion next year.

If each player a team scouts is given a numerical value 1-100 and is put on a board, then all other things being equal, yes, need will win out.

So if our pick comes up and there are five guys that are rated relatively close to each other, let's say a left tackle rated an 75, two wide receivers rated at 83 and 84, a cornerback at 85, and a defensive tackle at 97.

Under this scenario, there is no doubt in my mind that Gettleman picks the defensive tackle because he is overwhelmingly superior to the other players. Now of course it doesn't fill an immediate need, but as I stated before, rosters are a fluid entity that change constantly so what isn't a need right now might be a need soon.

Now let's take this same scenario and say the defensive tackle is an 84-85 value. In this scenario, I believe the team can go with the wideout over the defensive tackle, because even though the DT is technically the best player available, it is by such a minuscule margin that you can get the value there that you are looking for while also fulfilling an immediate need.

I would argue that in neither of these scenarios is it ok to take the left tackle, regardless of how badly we need one. Reason being, you simply can't pass up on either of the remaining players mentioned that are far superior to that player. Maybe, and it's a small maybe, if that tackle was as high as say an 83 could you entertain it, but even then it's a tough call I'd rather not make.

But then that's why the front office is in the war room and I'm writing this from the bathroom (shoutout to SCP). Because those are the calls they need to make during a draft that changes with each passing pick.

This.

Every player is given a number or put into a tier.

When you have guys of similar number value or in the same tier need will generally win out.

BPA and need are intertwined.

Ereck Flower will be available I'll take him over DJ all day every day bruh

not sure about Flower's lateral quickness.

That's nice and all but DJ is a 2-3 round prospect. Drafting him 25th overall would be reaching.

You even keep up with draft news and rumblings?

Lol at DJ being a 2-3 round prospect. He is widely regarded as one of the few true LT prospects in the draft.

He is probably be gone by the time we pick in the 1st.

Love this time of year.

Round 1: OT DJ Humphries Florida

humphries-draft-640.jpg

One of the more nimble athletic T's in the draft. Not polished yet, but has a alot of upside.

Round 2: WR Nelson Agholor University of Southern California

Would be a nice addition and make for a nice young nucleus of WR's.

Round 3: S Anthony Harris Virginia

This guy is a ball hack. Led the NCAA two years ago in picks.

Round 4: OT Lawrence Gibson Virgina Tech

Double dip.

#3287466 Tyler Vagyler Mock Draft w/ Trade

not realistic, but for fun not bad

#3267047 Draft prospect OT DJ Humphries has 2 visits lined up with CAR

Posted by MedellinHeel on 06 March 2015 - 09:24 PM

He's a natural LT and will most certainly be gone by the time we come up at 25.

Don't be fooled with all these mock drafts having La'El Collins and Ereck Flowers picked ahead of DJ Humphries.

Those guys are right tackles and will be taken after DJ.

I am worried about this as well.

I like Fisher also. He has the size and athletic ability to be a natural LT.

Praying one of them is on board.

#3266904 Panthers Sign Michael Oher

Posted by MedellinHeel on 06 March 2015 - 07:58 PM

This signing is at best meh.

Oher is simply not a good OT. He has been terrible the past couple of seasons.

Right now you should only expect him to he vet depth with the POTENTIAL to be a decent stop gap.

It comes down to the money. Two years at 8 mil seems too much for a guy that has played as poorly as Oher has.

#3265138 Mel Kiper has us picking D.J. Humphries in his Mock 3.0

Posted by MedellinHeel on 05 March 2015 - 11:58 PM

Hey man, good point. Smith is a beast. I just think gettleman wants some serious beef in his long term Oline.

Also, off of film, humpries was a 3rd rounder until the combine.. its hype man.

You know who had unbelievable combine numbers? Bruce Campbell.

Humphries also showed the same fluidity and foot speed on tape. People just never really got around to examining him with all the other more known OT's declaring.

Like I said, cant really have BPA, you can only have tiers, unless there is no other player in that same tier left on the board (usually not the case).

Drafting is pretty MUCH always a combination of talent, skill, potential, need, and organizational fit.

#3263891 DJ Humphries or Jake Fisher in the 1st

Posted by MedellinHeel on 05 March 2015 - 11:02 AM

Im going to rain on this parade. As much as we desperately need an adequate starting lt, i dont see us taking one in the first.

i see us taking ANY player other than MLB or QB in the first so long as Gman thinks they are the best player.

#3263501 Panthers met with Miami OT Ereck Flowers

Flowers is not fluid at all. Hell naw at picking him in the 1st. Humphries or Fisher

#3229337 Russell Wilson is smoke and mirrors.

Posted by MedellinHeel on 03 February 2015 - 02:56 AM
