One thing being lost here: our running game outside of Cam scrambles and some designed stuff was really really bad. The right side was getting no penetration whatsoever. A first round o lineman helps that a lot.
and so does an offensive linemen in the second or third round.
I'd argue that having a legitimate deep threat or receiver that can high point the ball and make tough catches in traffic benefits our running game more so than an early round tackle. If we had any weapons worth a damn on this team outside of an aging and steadily declining Steve Smith, teams would be reluctant to stack the box and it would free up our running lanes.
It works both ways...potent weapons in the passing attack free up and allow the running game + Cam running to get going. We do not have the weapons right now to keep a defense off balance. They can single cover anyone on our offense and we have no one that is a consistent threat to stretch the field and get over the top of a defense. As a result, the defense spies Cam, stacks the box, and shuts down our running game aside from broken plays where Cam gets out of the pocket and converts.
Yesterday we saw first hand what having a stud receiving core can do for a QB of Kaepernick's caliber. We had no answer for Boldin and Crabtree made some clutch grabs...Davis caught a touchdown that changed all momentum right before the half.
Our offensive line needs work, no doubt, but getting Amini and Kugbila back should create stiff competition at both guard competitions. Lets not act like Amini Silatolu is a scrub. He was actually playing pretty well overall when he went down and has the athleticism and physical ability to be a great guard for us for a long time. In between Gross and Kalil he will learn the mental aspects...the injury just hurts his progression and experience. I have a feel Gross will be back for another year or two.
We can find good talent at the right tackle position in the second or even third round. Any guy selected there is going to give Bell a run for his money and he will provide valuable depth. It's pathetic how often Cam had to take coverage sacks this season. Even with good protection up front he was forced to hold the ball far too long because of the lack of talent at the receiver position.
Look at the free agent WRs we have and tell me we don't need to draft a WR early.
I'm happy to have had 15min of unfamous fame on this site by commenting on Ron Rivera's daughter's Instagram pic. Remember? The one that mentioned the Huddle? I feel that got the word out about us and hopefully spawned a few new members. Good times. And what JayFlip said, we will be out to the Queen City sometime soon. OPFIM is a good dude.
I've seen OPFiM at a few road games, haha. AZ and SD the past two years. The three of us in my avatar will be making the pilgrimage to the QC next season. It'll be our first home Panther game ever. Already getting pretty giddy at the thought.
Road warriors baby. It was good seeing you both in Arizona this season...despite how atrocious that game turned out to be. I'm not living on the West Coast anymore so maybe we will run into one another in Charlotte in the future.
Put Cam in the shotgun, put a couple receivers out wide, and let him get a full head of steam running forward to pound it in. It has worked countless times and for whatever reason we decided to do something I don't recall us running very often.
The execution was even worse than the play calls. Pretty sure Tolbert and Cam got stuffed by their own teammates and one point. Who pulls a guard on the one inch line? Wharton tripped, inadvertently tackled Tolbert, and killed the play before it started.
I said before the year that we were likely a year away from making a legitimate push for a Super Bowl. I predicted us to go 9-7 and in reality just wanted to get a playoff birth. 12-4 and an NFCS Championship is enough to build on. We simply did not have the weapons nor the protection up front to get us to the promise land. That can be fixed in one off-season and I am looking forward to it. This is the off-season where we revamp the offense and build around the Franchise QB that is Cam Newton.
