#2669187 My New 32 Team Mock (1st round)

Posted by OnlyPantherFaninMaine on 27 February 2014 - 09:07 PM

http://houndsports.c...t-post-combine/

Check it out, let me know what you think. It's the first 32 team mock I have ever done and it was tougher than I thought. Still early in the pre-draft process so anything is possible aright now.

Thoughts?

Also, if you are a good writer and interested in doing some sports journalism, let me know and I can get you writing and published on that website linked above!

Mr. Beauxjangles asked you a question for the fifth time.

I have the same hat. I'd like to be the next Panther's receiver. Hopefully they draft me too.

#2663389 The Great Debate: Draft Edition

Posted by OnlyPantherFaninMaine on 23 February 2014 - 06:47 PM

From the options below, who would you prefer in a Panther's uniform?

1. Marqise Lee vs. Brandin Cooks

2. Kelvin Benjamin vs. Odell Beckham Jr.

3. Austin S-J vs. Jace Amaro

4. Jordan Matthews vs. Dante Moncrief

5. Davante Adams vs. Allen Robinson

6. Jack Mewhort vs. JuWaun James

7. James Hurst vs. Joe Bitonio

8. Marcus Roberson vs. Kyle Fuller

9. Loucheiz Purifoy vs. Bradley Roby

10. Xavier Su'a-Filo vs. David Yankey

Which decision was the hardest for you to make? Who are your favorites from the list above?

#2663343 Guess who got 16 reps on the bench press today

Posted by OnlyPantherFaninMaine on 23 February 2014 - 06:19 PM

His showing at the combine, didn't make him a first rounder. It solidified him as a first rounder.

What he did proved his tape wasn't a fluke, he's got plenty of speed to burn, he's got good hops and can pinpoint the ball in the air and go get it.

Not really. If you're implying that because Cooks had a "good combine showing" that he will be a first rounder, then why was he considered a late first rounder by so many draftniks before the Combine? If you're not implying this about Cooks, then pardon my assumption.

Or we actually watch both and realize Cooks' combine performance matches up with what he does in games, but sure go ahead...

Ding ding ding. This. Cooks was likely a first rounder before the combine; now he will be a first rounder. His combine showing just backed up what he did on the field. In fact, it proved he is an even better athlete and stronger than a lot of people gave him credit for.

I haven't specifically said that I am 100% against drafting him. I've said that if possible, I would much rather have someone taller. We have Cam Newton, we need a legit #1 for him who can go out there and fight for the ball, or go up and get it if necessary, and bail our quarterback out sometimes.

Go watch Brandin Cooks play. He does all of that. He is a fearless competitor that can highpoint balls, fight for possession, is great after the catch, and has great hands. His catch radius is impressive without even taking his height into account.

The entire point was just how long can his talent make up for his lack of height? Every players body is different.

You can say that about every player one way or another.

Take, for example, a tall receiver at 6'5" who isn't as explosive, fast, athletic, or polished as Cooks.

For how long can he get the separation needed to make his height consistently a factor in the passing game? If you aren't quick, can't run routes, and can't get out of your breaks now, how are they going to excel when age takes its toll and quicker and bigger corners can run with this 6'5" receiver?

As usual, if you offer anything remotely other than praise about a prospect, the fan boys come running.

So I want a taller WR for our franchise QB, obviously I just don't like Cooks. What a joke.

As usual, if a talented receiver under 6' is brought up, the detractors come running.

No one is saying we don't want a taller receiver either. I'd prefer a tall receiver too. But, if Cooks is available at 28 he is likely the best and most complete receiver on the board at face value. Just because we draft Cooks in round 1 does not mean we don't address the receiver position again a round or two after making him our first pick.

I wouldn't discount his size, but if we want to move Smitty to the slot we cannot draft Cooks... Between Smitty, Olsen, and Cooks there wouldn't be enough snaps to justify taking Cooks with our 1st pick. With that said I believe Cooks will be a stud, just not our stud.

There are many other directions we could go, such as Devante Adams, Jordan Matthews, or Kelvin Benjamin with our first pick

PS- I think Jeff Janis had the best workout among the second group, I think Prohl could turn Janis into a solid number 2 if we drafted late

Cooks doesn't need to be strictly lined up in the slot. He excels stretching the field and high-pointing the football. He has the body of a slot-man, but his game tells a different story.

Talent alone can only make up for lack of height for so long. Time waits for no man. See Steve Smith.

Let me get this straight:

You're against drafting arguably the most talented receiver in this draft, pound for pound, because you are worried that 12+ years down the line he won't be able to go up and get balls because he happens to be on the shorter side?

Unfortunately, talent, and upside won't make him grow taller.

But it will make him, most likely, a better football player.
