  • I think the thought behind cutting Nzegwu now is that he clears waivers so they can PS squad him.

If this was the front offices thinking,  "cut him in the first round of cuts so teams don't think he very good".  It is actually kind of smart.

#2336055 1st string O struggling against ravens 2nd string D

Posted by Leeroy Jenkins PhD on 23 August 2013 - 11:35 AM

I appreciate your optimism but:

The 3rd preseason game should be your dress rehersal for the regular season. Is it too late to fire Shula?

Our offense has taken the term vanilla to a new level. Given Shula's track record I would like to have seen the spread it out more. His scheme is making our offense look terrible he better get creative.

Cam has me worried I cannot tell if his accuracy is due to the fact that our OL sucks and he is he is hurrrying his progression . I am also worried that Cam is going to get hurt given our OL.If you cant field a decent OL let Cam run for his life. His injuries seem to come on sacks not running.

I get it Gettlemen does not want to overpay anyone but our OL needs help how about getting some players

The Ravens have a good line but so do the seahawks we need to get an OL quick.

Our offense did not score 1 point. Can we count on 34 points from defense and ST....I think not

The 3rd preseason game should be your dress rehearsal for the regular season.

Have you watched the preseason the last 2 years? Even the "so important" 3rd game? In 2011, we lost to Cincy 24-13, cam was 6 of 19 for 75 yards...... In 2012, we squeaked by the Jets 17-12 with a 4th quarter DA TD.  Cam was 6 of 15 for 64 yards and an interception.

Cams accuracy has actually improved. when you compare the preseason games!

GETTLEMEN WILL BRING IN MORE O-LINE HELP.  there are currently approximately 90 players on each team that will be trimmed to 53 over the next couple weeks.  (37 players x 31 teams) 1,147 players will be hitting the FA market.  Of those 1,147 players, there will be a lot of lineman. I am willing to bet that a handful of these lineman will be of better quality than what is on our roster.  Just look at Detroit, who has 6 quality guards on their roster.  They will cut one.

Out of 8 drives last night, 6 of them crossed the 50.  Imagine if Amini hadn't gone out early, and we actually had a FB on the field. Or we were running anything other than simple runs and slot routes.  That was not our offensive dress rehearsal.  Carolina never ever shows what their offense can do in the preseason.

You must remember a handful of things about our offense.

1. We are playing extremely vanilla.
2. We have no starting FB with Tolbert and White Mike out.
3. That is not the O-line we are going to start the year with.
4. Cam is historically bad in the preseason.
5. The Ravens have a very good D-line

Let me just say, I am on the bandwagon and can not wait to post a winning record.  I am looking forward to rubbing it in.  It has been way to long, I have taken my ridicule, its time to win.

#2330694 Best goal line RB in 2012

Player             Attempts      TD        Expected      Diff

Mike Tolbert         8              7              3.7          3.3

Andre Brown       12             8              5.2          2.8

Mikel Leshoure     7             6              3.7          2.3

Bilal Powell           5              3              1.1          1.9

Alfred Morris       12             7              5.2          1.8

Why doesn't Tolbert get every goal line carry?

This is a silly train of thought.  If you don't think Gettleman knows this teams weaknesses intimately than you don't have a lot of faith in the man.  If you think he doesn't have a team of people scouting other teams for possibilities to upgrade those weaknesses, again, I think you are wrong.

If you should be hoping for anything, it is that the players on our team show they can handle the starting role against good competition.  That way, we don't have our hand forced into paying way to much for a stop-gap veteran or being forced to trade away draft picks to secure the spot.

#2328819 Post-cut Guards, who will we pick up?

Posted by Leeroy Jenkins PhD on 19 August 2013 - 02:31 PM

Reading this thread is also a lesson in the stupidity of over analyzing a preseason game. Jut look at everyone complaining about how our DEs suck.

I think some of that stems from a simple misunderstanding of the D-line.

The best DE's in the world are going to look rather mediocre if they are not paired with good DTs.  There are a variety of reasons for this.  The most obvious being blocking assignments.  If the lineman are able to block the DTs without using a double team, this increases the emphasis on blocking the DEs (especially bull-rushing DEs)  Also, if the QB has a well developed pocket to sit in due to lack of interior push, it can appear that the DEs are just not applying any pressure at all.

*This is just another reason to be really excited about our defense this season!!!

The most likely pull for Gettleman, and not nearly as favorable as getting a player from the Detroit roster would be pulling a young cut from the Giants roster.

They have Boothe and Snee in starter roles at guard and multiple young quality backups along the line including S Caspers (3rd year) , M Jasper (2nd year), Stephen Goodin (2nd year), Chris Degeare (3rd year), etc.

7th round draft pick Eric Herman could likely be hidden away on their practice squad.

There is a really interesting position battle for RG in Detroit right now.

They have three solid NFL veterans: Dylan Gandy, Jake Scott and Leroy Harris, they couldn't pass up the opportunity to draft Larry Warford when he fell to them in the 3rd.  With the LG position solidified with Rob Sims and second year man Rodney Austin, it is likely that one of the three veterans competing for the RG spot will be released.

This is aided by the fact that the Lions really like UDFA Darren Keyton who can also play back-up Center.

It is possible, if Warford wins the starting role (which I assume the Lions are pushing for) 2 of the 3 veteran guards could be released.

Look for Dylan Gandy, Jake Scott, Rodney Austin, Rob Sims or Leroy Harris  to hit the market after final cuts are made.  That is just too many highly paid players for one position.
