#2901505 Rivera on Cam: "He's got to develop as a passer."

Yet, we'll probably still run the read option 25% of the time.

#2900723 Dave Newton-Outburst aside...Norman having a great camp

I m the biggest combine nut here, but I think we put a little to much faith in combine numbers. I saw dat thomas over his career and he looked like the fastest guy on the field in any game he was in. Come to the combine and he looked like he didn't have game breaking NFL speed so i soured on him. Well Come time to suit up and he looks like the fastest guy on the field again... I can't explain it other than game speed trumps clocked times.

Game speed can absolutely trump clocked times.  Clocked times don't take into consideration instincts and how well a player sees what's happening in front of him.  But, speed is speed,  Again, I was simply responding to a post talking about Norman's special athletic ability.  That special athletic ability is a myth.

Yep, look for them to go to Donald LaFell on quick slants to counter Kelly.

Please go to LaFell on slants.  Throw him right into big hits.

#2900449 Charlotte's WSOC TV bumping Bristol race in favor of Redskins game, Panth...

Bristol is one of my favorite tracks.

This.  Not much of a NASCAR fan these days primarily because because they've pulled out of most of the short tracks like Bristol.  That's real racing.  Restrictor plate racing is boring bullshit.

you seem to be under the impression that the NFL combine actually measures someone's athleticism

That's the entire point of the NFL Combine - to quantify the athleticism of the top prospects on an even playing field.

Norman being this supreme physical talent is one of the biggest Panthers myths there is. Just about every single workout of his at the Combine was below average for an NFL CB. He was the top CB performer in broad jump for his class, but that was because the entire class was weak in that drill compared to the norm. He would've been tied for 9th in broad jump in this past CB class.

The numbers don't lie. Josh Norman is a below average athlete for an NFL CB.

no way....too much talent. They are still slapping his wrists

I just haven't seen this remarkable talent so many Panthers fans speak of. I've seen lots of coverage errors and lots of mental lapses. An INT here and there doesn't equal great talent.

#2900066 Possible DE Trade?

Posted by LinvilleGorge on 20 August 2014 - 02:40 PM

Wes Horton isn't a good enough player that he couldn't be cut

That's exactly the point of this thread.  Horton is an NFL caliber player, but he may be the odd man out given our roster. That's the type of player that gets traded this time of year.

I doubt it happens, but if we're speculating about trades, DE is probably the first place to look.

Roman Harper needs to be cut....2 yr/4.5M to watch a guy have turf toe? No thanks.

That contract really had me shaking my head at the time.  I figured Harper would be a veteran minimum type guy.  I was really surprised we game him $1.5M guaranteed.

That knee injury for chandler is worrying.

That and Turner nursing a sore groin.  We have two starters on our weakest unit nursing (hopefully) minor injuries.  I really hope that our staff is just being super cautious with them knowing that our depth sucks.  Hope both of these guys can be 100% by the time the regular season kicks off.

Best of luck to LaFell, but we all know what's gonna happen.  I for one look forward to when he drops a wide open pass on a crucial 3rd down on primetime television and Brady goes absolutely ballistic on him.

#2899823 Byron Bell starting is a "fait accompli"

Posted by LinvilleGorge on 20 August 2014 - 11:42 AM

I know it is very early given we haven't even played any regular season games, but if Bell does better on the left side versus the right I want all the multiple posters who made tons of post laughing about how being left handed and playing left tackle in college wouldn't change anything to eat platefuls of crow.

Hell, I'll enjoy every last delicious bite of that crow! I still need to see him hold up for a few games that count before I fire up the grill though.

#2899035 Eagles trade for Barner

Posted by LinvilleGorge on 19 August 2014 - 08:58 PM

Nice.  Best for him and the team.  If he's gonna make any roster, it'll be with the team that hired his old college coach and we get a 7th round pick back for a guy who didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of making the roster.  Win/win.

#2898510 Who's the 'Prototype' for the New Age QB? Newton or Luck?

Posted by LinvilleGorge on 19 August 2014 - 03:23 PM

I think it's more that our defense is no longer giving away games and Rivera isn't quite as conservative.  I don't think Cam has really changed in that regard.  He was always pretty doggone good in the clutch, we'd just score too fast and Rivera/McDermott would go crazy conservative on D and we'd end up giving the game away.

#2898260 Who's the 'Prototype' for the New Age QB? Newton or Luck?

Posted by LinvilleGorge on 19 August 2014 - 12:56 PM

I wouldn't agree Luck is a better runner than Jameis. Jameis has been a dual threat QB all his life. Luck is just willing to move his ass outta the pocket unlike previous era QBs. Nothing special about him at all. He's just being well marketed. For some reason a lot of people wanna see him do well.

Luck is a better runner at the NFL level than Winston is at the college level.  Neither are great runners, but Luck is decent enough at it to be a functional runner at the NFL level when he needs to be.  Winston won't be.

Luck is a damn good QB.  Not sure why so many Panthers fans want to try to tear him down in order to build Cam up.  Cam doesn't need it.  I'll take Cam over Luck straight up.  Passing is virtually equal, but Cam offers a lot more threat with his legs.
