#2598902 Official Huddle Playoff Tickets Contest #2 - Pure Poetry

Posted by Tom on 09 January 2014 - 09:26 PM

A tribute, of sorts:

I celebrate my team, and sing Carolina,

And what I cheer, you shall cheer,

For every great play belonging to me as good belongs to you.

I stand and unleash my soul,

I yell and scream as the defense stands firm upon the grass.

My team, every player has shed his blood, form'd under the Wofford sun,

Born here of Gettleman and Hurney the same,

I, now 19 years a fan, never waiver

I sound my barbaric yawp in BOA.

Sweep the Saints = division winner.

Splitting w/ the Saints would require the Saints to lose to either to the Rams or the Bucs for Carolina to win the Division. Assuming a split, Carolina could lose to the Jets (but not the Falcons) and still win the division if the Saints' loss is against the Bucs. If Saints loss is against Rams, then Carolina has to beat Jets/ Falcons.

Carolina only needs two wins to guarantee a WC spot so even if we get swept by the Saints beating Jets/Falcons gets us in.

#2322225 Your "low point" as a Panthers fan

Then i wonder how bad Raiders fans feel. How many times has that team picked in the top 5 of the draft over the past decade?

Just two years? The Lions, Browns, Rams, Chiefs, and Raiders have had it worse recently.

Y'all are right. We aren't in the bottom tier of franchishes, probably in the second worst tier (of four).

2001 hands down. Losing 15 straight in one season (an NFL record at the time, thanks Det!) was brutal.

#2322111 Anybody a little concerned with Beason?

Posted by Tom on 13 August 2013 - 11:29 AM

I don't know about Beason but the Panthers were in base 4-3 on less than 1/2 of all defensive snaps last year. Obviously they want him on the field for those plays but the reality is that the Panthers play with only 2 LBs on the field most of the time (source: Football Outsiders). Losing him is losing a situational player not an every down guy.

#2313159 Cam Newton & Steve Smith Interview

The book Cam mentions is a self-help about interpersonal skills, effective leadership, and personal development. Regardless of the effectiveness of the book, I'm impressed that Cam is working hard at improving himself as a person and not just as a football player.

#2276615 Panthers to ink Quintin Mikell?

McDermott is certainly familiar with him. Mikell made the Pro Bowl under him in 2009. Hope this gets done.

#1868919 Blurb on Amini

From ProFootballFocus:

Pick No. 40 - Amini Silatolu (Panthers)
Over the course of the two games watched of each second rounder, I’m not sure anyone impressed me as much as Amini Silatolu. The fact that he was even in a position to start given he hails from Division II, Midwestern State is surprising enough, but to play as well as he did, given the caliber of the opposition, is remarkable.
Playing first Houston and then Miami it wasn’t an easy beginning and he was bull-rushed early in the first game by Antonio Smith into giving up a pressure, but then showed a lot of skill in all facets of play. He moved smoothly in space, got to the second level quickly and in the second outing made an excellent downfield block on Jason Trusnik on a screen. If he was initially beaten in pass protection, he fought to recover and also picked up an awful lot of stunts for a preseason game against the Dolphins. In the end, that hurry from Smith was his only major error.
In week three of the pre season he’ll be given another major test when he faces the Jets and their rather exotic blitz packages. I for one will be interested in how he performs.

The last time Cam faced PP7.

PP7 is the one Cam accelerates by at the end of the run.

#1319360 Did You Actually Want Cam Drafted?

Posted by Tom on 10 August 2011 - 11:47 AM

Luck has a skill set that translates very well to the pro game, so people expect him to be thenext Peyton Manning. Will he be? Don't know, but it's a reasonable expectation.

Expecting Luck to be the next Peyton Manning is a reasonable expectation?
If expecting a guy to be the one of the best ever is reasonable, I'm not sure I know what an unreasonable expectation is.

#1084552 The Cam Newton and Race Thread!

Posted by Tom on 09 March 2011 - 01:20 PM

In all the discussion of quarterbacks on here, I've only ever seen one person say he didn't like black quarterbacks, and he was roundly chastised for it.

It's more subtle than that. It's when people question the work ethic or intelligence of the black qb. Has there been any debate over whether Gabbert has the drive or intelligence to become a good NFL qb? Not really.

I also saw one announcer at the combine refer to Cam as "well spoken". Do white guys get described as well spoken? No, it's just taken as a given that they are.

#1062394 A good and fair article about 1st round QB's

Posted by Tom on 24 February 2011 - 11:21 AM

But if you look at all 32 starting QBs, there are only 5 or 6's QBs drafted past the first round that start for the team that drafted them. Of those guys, the only one with much success is Brady. So the point still stands, draft a QB in the first round or find one outside of the draft.
