That may be true, but this theory doesn't really make any sense. If I'm being brutally honest, it sounds like wishful thinking.
If a team were trying to drive down the cost of a potential extension, they wouldn't do it by hyping up the player. Talking a guy up is what you do when you're trying to get good trade value for him.
Whether or not Newton is ultimately staying or going, I don't know. But this particular theory just doesn't hold water for me.
