Warren Sapp calls out Gerald McCoy

Recommended Posts

Sapp's argument is silly though. You can't expect a defensive tackle to single handedly lead a team to the super bowl.

Let's take JJ Watt. From 2013 to 2015 he was first team all-pro every year and won defensive player of the year 2 of the 3 years (and came in 6th the other year). How many playoff games did Houston win in that stretch? Zero. What was their record during that span? 20-28. And just to really drive it home, in 2016 when Watt only played 3 games all season due to injury, Houston won a playoff game that year. I'm sure Sapp will warn the hall of fame committee before they make Watt a unanimous first year selection when his time comes.

Perfect. Another player with a chip on their shoulder.  I expect him to have a great year with double digit sacks

McCoy is as great as any Buc that has played the game.

It isn't his fault that he has played with 2 QBs that couldn't win their way out of a paper bag

And a GM that couldn't get him any help on defense.

He's excited to play with a coach that knows defense and has some pro bowl caliber players around him.

Gerald McCoy had Josh freeman and a guy that loves to eat Ws at QB.

Josh Freeman loved eating Adderall. You're thinking of "Famous" Jameis Winston who loves stealing crab legs and eating W's.

Sapp's problem is that he's trying to compare team accomplishments to individual greatness.  Team accomplishments require a great team.  I would submit that McCoy has never had that.  So let's compare individual accomplishments.

Warren Sapp (1995 - 2007, 13 year career)

  • 7 Pro Bowl
  • 4 First Team All Pro
  • 2 Second Team All Pro

Gerald McCoy (2010 - 2018, 9 year career and counting)

  • 6 Pro Bowl
  • 3 First Team All Pro
  • 1 Second Team All Pro

Give Gerald McCoy a career as long as Sapp's, and it's fair to say that he will likely equal or eclipse those accomplishments.  And let's be honest, it's much harder to accomplish the things McCoy has when you are the only "great" player on the team as he has been for his career.

I'm glad he's here.  I hope the Panthers stay healthy this year and live up to the promise they are showing.  How sweet would it be for McCoy to win a SB the very first season after he leaves the Bucs as part of a defense with multiple Pro Bowlers surrounding him?  How sweet would it be for us if he has another 2 - 3 outstanding seasons here and retires a Panther?

And in the end, Sapp is being not just forgotten but swept under the rug after beating up on a hooker after the Superb Owl and going broke after some bad real estate deals and atrocious spending habits.

I'm thinking the humble, team centric and good hearted McCoy is definitely the one of the pair I'd prefer to have on the team.

He makes some good points

Lets see, Sapp played on a Roster with 5 Hall of Fame guys, McCoy played on a roster with zero?

Who has the better point? The article also says that "McCoy LED the Bucs to a ...... record". Would we be suggesting a defensive tackle is the most responsible player for wins and losses on the field?

Two players I can think of McCoy might have played with who are good: Levonte David and Aqib Talib. That's it.

Can’t compare Sapp to GMC. Sapp played with HOFers on his defense, who the hell did GMC play with and he still put up great numbers.
