  1. What fun is that? If you don't think that our "#2" receiver is our biggest problem what would you consider our biggest issue offensively.
  2. The visit list might give you an idea of what positions we are trying to focus on but maybe not the round. He seems to be looking at certain positions throughout the draft. This would fall in line with value based drafting (trying not to call it BPA so we don't get that started). For example we met with Parker, who probably won't be there at 25, but of the top 3 receivers he would be the most likely to fall. But we have also met with receivers that would be there in later rounds such as Montgomery or Lewis. Would be interesting to take that list and assign draft grades to each player. Some patterns might appear.
  3. I would probably take Peat just because tackles seem so hard to find. To be honest though my knowledge of both is limited to a few highlight videos. Hopefully our coaches, scouting department, and GM will have a better evaluation of both since they have probably actually watched tape of every snap they took in college, talked to their former coaches and possible even interviewed the players.
  4. It is easy for a lot of fans to point at certain players to explain deficiencies with their particular team. It use to be LaFell, now it's Cotchery. Here are the yardage totals for the third leading receiving options for the 6 NFC playoff teams according to espn.com. 580 - Cotchery 621 446 322 367 696 I'm not saying we shouldn't look for upgrades. I will take an upgrade at any position, but these numbers might illustrate what Magnus is referring to as opportunity cost.
  5. I would be renting, not buying, if I was some of these guys. Special teams contributions, future potential (age), and practice squad eligibility might all factor into some of the final decisions.
  6. I would expect us to keep 5-6 receivers on the 53 man roster. Of those on the roster right now I feel like KB and Ginn are pretty much guarenteed roster spots. That leaves the following receivers to compete for the last 3-4 roster spots: Corey Brown Bersin Cotchery Boykin Hill Presley Mike Brown Lucas Potential draft pick Potential free agent (Jennings)
  7. So all year people claimed that "anyone" would be better than what we have, but when we sign "anyone" they complain. For those that aren't happy with this or the Oher signing who would you have signed? I didn't really notice many quality tackles hit the open market. Sent from my iPhone using CarolinaHuddle
  8. If we are going to use a 1,000 yards as a benchmark for a quality player, Cam had two 1,000 yard receivers and Tannehill had none.
  9. Between the franchise tag and increased risk of injury waiting to become a free agent in the NFL is a lot riskier then the NBA.
  10. So you don't think Cam's side has thrown out a number at all? I would guess they have, it just happens to be crazy high. Maybe they are waiting for Luck and Wilson to provide leverage to get that number. But I could be wrong. Maybe Cam is determined to be the highest paid player in the league. What if we offered 6yrs/150m? Would they still wait for Luck and Wilson?
  11. I have actually said he needed more help in the past. My point is with some posters there will never be enough "help". All I heard in 2013 was that Lafell was the problem. I guess Brady didn't get that memo. Our offense was about as bad in 2013 before the great WR purge and Bell/Chandler experiment. I'm not saying it is all Cam's fault but I have my doubts that fixing our offense is as easy as signing some "2" receiver. I think it is a combination of QB play, surrounding talent, and coaching.
  12. I would guess his agents are already asking for the bigger number. Although Cam hasn't made a deep playoff run yet his agent could argue he constitutes a larger part of our offense then almost any other QB in the league. I would guess one of three things is going on here. 1. Team isn't convinced Cam is the long term answer yet and is content with him playing one more year at the 5th year option price. Option 1 can be risky if his value goes up, but if he is already asking for huge money there might not be as much risk as you would think. For example if he wants $23m a year now will an extra year really add that much? 2. Cam wants more then we are willing to pay. 3. (least likely) Cam wants to become a free agent and control his own destiny like you see in the NBA with some players.
  13. Special teams contributions might play a part in these decisions as the roster is trimmed to 53.
  14. Unless Cam is surrounded by 10 pro bowlers that clarity might never happen for some posters around here.
  15. Maybe all three need to improve. Better coaching Better talent around Cam. Better execution from Cam. Here is an interesting article that talks about Cam leading the league in coverage sacks. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2014/2013-quarterbacks-true-sack-rate Not only can a good Oline make a QB's job easier a good QB can make an Oline look better. Personally I think Cam has as much talent as any QB in the league but I do think there is room for improvement. Luckily for us most QBs continue to improve over a much longer period then other positions. Better talent around him should help facilitate that improvement.
  16. DG isn't going to put himself into a position where he has to take a particular position in a specific round. Our draft choices are going to be dictated by what other teams do ahead of us. This is why mock drafts are so inaccurate. Going into the draft we might want to go OT>DE>WR, but what if Parker drops to us in the 1st? Our draft could quickly change to WR>OT>RB. From looking at the visits list it is pretty clear that they are looking at certain positions throughout the draft.
  17. The last 3 years on his contract look to be voidable years. For all practicable purposes 2015 is the last year of his contract.
  18. The article linked by the OP actually explains some of this. They lost 7 eligible free agents and gained none. Sent from my iPhone using CarolinaHuddle
  19. Revis was cut by his previous team, therefore he doesn't factor in the equation.
  20. Maybe the "pickins" will be better in the first few rounds of the draft because of this.
  21. I would disagree. I would think other teams would consider you more unpredictable if they thought you were a BPA based drafter. Part of being successful at drafting is having a feel on how the board will fall.
  22. Would it be more beneficial for other teams to believe you are picking based off of BPA or Need?
  23. $14.8 million of that $33 million is from his signing bonus. Two years left at $7.4 million. That money has already been paid and there is nothing the team can do to avoid the cap hit associated with it. The other $18,750,000 is guaranteed in the form of his 2015 salary. If he was to be traded another team could assume that guaranteed salary. http://overthecap.com/player/drew-brees/1492/shows this breakdown. Here is an article that explains some of the differences in the different types of guaranteed money. http://overthecap.com/trading-dead-money-nfl-expiring-contract/
  24. Not exactly. The Saints would be responsible for the dead money from his prorated signing bonus. Guaranteed salary can be traded. If another team was willing to assume his salary and to guarantee it the Saints could theoretically save cap space by trading him. I always assumed the Saints would continue to push cap charges down the road until Brees retired. At that point they would probably be really bad anyway and they could clear up the cap while getting some high draft choices. Seems to me they are hitting the reset button early.
  25. To get a player to agree to a back loaded contract you have to give them a signing bonus. That is exactly what causes dead money when you cut a player early. Also the Niners didn't cut Crabtree, his contract expired. That is the reason he is not affecting their cap.
