Martinook Placed On Waivers
MillionDollarCam replied to MillionDollarCam's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
Looking at this a little more, I think the plan is this: 1. Martinook waived, free’s up $1,800,000 in cap space. 2A. If he’s claimed, oh well… Gardiner goes to LTIR, Stepan gets signed, and the Canes hold on to Bear until they get what they want. OR 2B. He’s not claimed and the Canes don’t have him report to Chicago but have effectively cleared $1,800,000 in salary. 3. Gardiner goes on LTIR freeing up $4,050,000 in salary, at this point the Canes would have just under $1.5M in cap space. 4. Stepan signs for $750K, at this point the Canes would have just under 700K in cap space. 5. The Canes trade Bear for a draft pick when they get exactly what they are asking for (I’m guessing a third), at this point the Canes would have around $2.8M in cap space. 6. Finally, the Canes recall Martinook adding $1.8M back to the cap. At this point the Canes would have $1M in cap space allowing them just enough room to call up players from the AHL should an injury occur. This is kind of how I see it playing out. -
Charlotte Hornets Preseason
MillionDollarCam replied to MillionDollarCam's topic in Charlotte Hornets
Team looks a little better but overall still leaves a lot to be desired. All of the Celtics starters are sitting this one out except for Jaylen Brown and if it wasn’t for the second chance points, the Hornets would be in a much closer game. -

We play the Celtics again tonight, I dare say it can’t go worse than the last game against the Celtics did. At this point I’m just looking for a positive to take out of preseason, thus far there isn’t a single one as I haven’t been impressed by anyone’s performance. -
Looks like the Canes are preparing to bring Staal back, wouldn’t be surprised if they keep resigning him to one year deals until he decides to call it quits. https://www.nhl.com/news/carolina-hurricanes-jordan-staal-contract-status-update/c-336151004 Staal, along with Paccioretty, Fast, Kase, Stastny, de Haan, Coghlan (RFA), Bear (RFA), Gardiner, Andersen, Raanta, and likely Stepan will all be free agents at the end of the year. The Canes should have a little under $30M in cap space next year.

Martinook Placed On Waivers

Great article by Lavalette explaining the situation, it’s a must read for Canes fans trying to figure out what’s going on. https://nsjonline.com/article/2022/10/jordan-martinook-on-waivers-what-are-the-hurricanes-doing-this/ Essentially, the Canes need to get cap compliant and Martinook’s salary helps them do that, the Canes also feel that Marty won’t be claimed because his contract his backloaded. Waiving Drury or Jarvis does nothing for us cap wise (both are waivers exempt) and Noesen, Chatfield, or Bear were likely to be claimed. Waiving Martinook allows the Canes to sign Stepan, get the guys on IR that need to be on IR, and then wait out the market for Bear. Corey seems to suggest that as soon as Bear is gone that Marty will be back up (assuming he clears) and that the Canes won’t even ask him to report to Chicago if he makes it through. But long story short, the Canes are prepared to wait out the market for Bear a little bit longer. -

Not sure really, unless they don’t feel like Pesce will be ready for the start of the season. -

Drury is exempt from waivers because he’s on his ELC but I think that at this point he doesn’t get better by going back to the AHL, needs to playing with the big boys. Kind of similar to how we didn’t send Jarvis back to juniors (wasn’t eligible for the AHL due to his age), it wouldn’t have done anything for him. I think Noesen is the one being protected, he scored 48 goals in the AHL last year and would likely get claimed due to his low salary if he was to be placed on waivers. -
This deserves its’ own thread because wow… was not expecting that. Current Roster Teravainen - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - Kotkaniemi - Necas Stastny - Staal - Fast Drury - Stepan - Kase Noesen Slavin - Burns Skjei - Pesce de Haan - Coghlan Chatfield Bear Andersen Raanta Injured - Paccioretty, Gardiner

Definitely expecting the playoffs next year if Karol is back and he’s playing that number 9 type of role that he played for us over the last four games or so (unless we land a game changing attacking midfielder). Putting him there really helped the team as a whole. -

No Pesce or Noesen on the ice, Pesce isn’t 100% so that makes sense. Noesen was on the ice yesterday but not today… he either picked up a knock or got sent down. -

I think worse case scenario Paccioretty goes on LTIR with Gardiner and they deal with the cap when he gets back, we’d still be one over the roster limit though so someone would have to go down. With Stepan’s signing imminent, Chatfield pairing with Skjei in practice yesterday, and Coghlan’s preseason… it feels like Noesen or Drury would be the odd man out. Or the Canes just say screw it and bury Bear in the AHL. -

Karol is a good player and he knows it, but at the end of the day he needs to realize that he’s playing in the MLS, no matter how good he is, he shouldn’t be pouting on the field like Ronaldo. -
A.k.a. a college football recruiter.

I’m obviously just guessing here but the fact that the roster isn’t finalized makes me think that someone is being shopped… *cough* *cough*, Bear. -
I’m not too far from Amelia, she must be at the Ritz or Omni living it up, must be nice.

So both Rios and Jones could have started since they were on the bench for the original game, they just would have counted as two of our five subs. I guess the consolation is that Miami mollywhopped Orlando so our chances of making the playoffs, even with a win last night, would have been slim. We would have had to beat Red Bulls and Orlando and Columbus would have needed to play to a draw, or, Cincinnati would have needed to lose against D.C. United, both unlikely scenarios. -

Don’t think it matters if it’s illegal or not, cut blocks (for obvious reasons) aren’t practiced and as mentioned before they are heavily frowned upon. I can guarantee you that if we start cutting down other teams tackles and ends, they will do the same to Burns, Brown, etc. Cut blocks are just unsafe for both parties, I’ve seen instances where the OL don’t do them properly and get kneed in the head, not to mention the obvious damage that it can do to a defensive linemen. Most linemen simply won’t do them and I don’t blame them.

Charlotte Hornets Preseason

We counting on Hayward to play the whole year? Maybe he and Martin combined can make up 25 points but odds are that Hayward misses at least a fourth of the season due to one thing or another. -
Does it work for fans if they don’t like their HC? Asking for a friend.

Baker had 5 batted passes in his last game for Cleveland (against the Steelers)… are we going to blame our OL for that as well… I see two issues: 1) The trajectory of the ball is coming out way to low because of his arm angle, at this point that’s not something that’s going to be fixed. 2) Mayfield is not a good fit for the offense McAdoo wants to run. McAdoo wants to get the ball out quick and a lot of these batted passes are coming on plays where Baker already knows where he is going with the ball pre-snap, I’ve seen a few where he doesn’t even drop back… it’s just set and throw (then the football gets spiked back in his face). Additionally, Baker has one of the worst (and I think it is the worst) air yards per attempt in the NFL this year, that’s on McAdoo… you have a smaller QB throwing the majority of his routes at no more than 10 yards down the field. For a guy who has a low trajectory on his passes already, that does him absolutely no favors. It’s also obvious that Baker needs an extended drop back, preferably 5 steps. Watch him from his time in Cleveland, a lot of his drop backs were extended. If McAdoo doesn’t change things up then this will continue to happen.
