The hard part about selling Panther fans on a defensive coach is that it's all we've ever had. Beyond that though, the league is pushing more and more toward maximizing offense and limiting defense. It's much harder to win big with say, a Ron Rivera type than it used to be.

Johnson's initial success came with a team that could just outspend everybody for the top stars. Once the salary cap was implemented, he came back to earth. No coach who's won a Super Bowl has ever won another with a second team. Yet fans think hiring a guy like Payton is a clear path to a championship. A lot goes into coaching success, with the organization being a big part of it. That's a prime reason why I cringe when people think hiring someone who's one in the past guarantees smooth sailing.

The retread proven winner idea sounds nice... until you look at how many of them fail to reproduce their success. The Dolphins and the Cowboys both hired two time Super Bowl winners in Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells. Neither of them sniffed a Super Bowl with their new teams.
-
To head coach? Kinda doubt it. Johnson is from the Carolinas and may well have grown up as a Panther fan. He'd have been about 17 when the team went to their first Super Bowl.

It ain't gonna be Aaron Glenn Johnson was on staff as a coaching assistant at Boston college when Luke Kuechly was a player there. Don't think he'd ask Luke to be his DC, but linebacker coach or some other staff position might be plausible. Also with regard to Johnson and former Panther players, posted this elsewhere but it works here too... I'm sure everybody knows that first quote, but that second one somehow sounds vaguely... familiar
-
Adding this... If that second quote sounds familiar to you, it should.

Couple things on that front... Also, can't find the tweet but I saw where Johnson's offense could potentially be on pace to score the most points in NFL history. Don't know if that's going to happen, but if it does it puts them in the company of groups like The Greatest Show on Turf.

Better take...

Speaking of our old friend Ron... Sound familiar?

So everyone should stop complaining about the terrible football so that we can keep having terrible football... Yeah sure

Rhule is a classic bullsh-t artist. His philosophy is that he doesn't have to actually answer the question. He just has to say something. If you're winning games, you can get away with that. People will laugh it off. If you're losing, then you're basically just a con man.

I actually don't think it can, and the reason has nothing to do with Tepper. Kevin Colbert had for all intents and purposes been King of Steelerland for a long, long time, but over the past few years he effectively lost that position to Mike Tomlin. With all the power and the good will he's built up over the years of never having a losing season, I don't think his first one is going to get him fired.

PFF grades from Panthers' Week 4 loss to Cardinals

But he has to help save the coach's job -
I'm not seeing him talked about as much this year but he could be. Rivera didn't interview well, but I never heard of anyone attributing red flags to him.

There's something there. Maybe it's the criminal record. Maybe it's his personality. Maybe it's something none of us knows. But it's there...

Also Wisconsin...

Young offensive options: Ben Johnson, Brian Callahan, Shane Steichen, Ken Dorsey Defensive coaches: Demeco Ryans, Jonathan Gannon, Patrick Graham, Jerod Mayo Guy I like best: Rich Bisaccia Second choice: at the moment, Don Martindale Guys I don't think are ready: Byron Leftwich, Kellen Moore Guys I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole: Eric Bieniemy, Sean Payton Guy I think probably gets the job: Dorsey

Pretty sure Dodds wasn't willing to work under Matt Rhule. Funny thing is since then the Colts have started trending in the wrong direction, especially with the Carson Wentz trade. They're trying to fix it with Matt Ryan but the jury's still out on that.

I think you're letting what happened with Beane cloud your judgment a little. That, or Morgan fanhood. Morgan doesn't have the scouting experience Fitterer has, nor the interview experience for that matter. He's only had one interview that I know of. That was with the Steelers, who basically interviewed everybody. At this point, he's not really on anyone's "hot list" and I don't expect this season will help his cause much.

"We will respond. We always do." (still trying to figure out when that was supposed to have happened)
