Well you just have to get a guy like Brown in this defense. We need a space eater/run stopper at NT. We haven't had that and it showed. I agree Brown was likely to happen with or without Williams. My issue with Wharton is that he has even less flexibility than Jones. He is a pass rush specialist only. So keeping him on the field for three downs makes our defense worse against the run, which is not desirable at all.

I mean, I agree that we basically took a larger pool of money and got POTENTIALLY basically three averagish rotational guys for a bigger chunk of money. That's not great bang for the buck.....MAYBE. Conversely, if Williams ends up being just an average player, did we get any better and how do you pivot and unload that whale of a contract? I think in general either side of this coin has some financial malfeasance. With Williams you are giving out the Horn contract again. A player that has high potential but has really done very little to deserve being one of the highest paid players at the position. And a rotational guy on an amazing line, to boot. With Brown, Wharton and Jones you have at least one massively overpaid and substantially worse contract than even Williams with the Wharton deal. Another rotational guy but without anywhere near the perceived upside nor even the true body of work. All that being said, we have aggravating factors that actively work against us. I have no doubt we are one of the bottom 5 destinations for free agents if you DON'T overpay. Additionally, we are so insanely bad on that front 7 that all these backup caliber/rotational guys are likely to play significantly more snaps here because of how poorly this roster is constructed. So maybe this slight upgrade overall is actually worth more in terms of quality of the defense?

Mykel Williams is very unlikely to ever be an elite pass rusher, IMO. He also seems far more suited to being a 4-3 end than an EDGE in our scheme. For those reasons, I would be disappointed to see that as the pick at 8. I can stomach it as a trade down scenario.

The FA moves so far have been confusing. Some seem rooted in the reality of the fact that we aren't going to be making a big turnaround in year 2, however others seem like throwing caution to the wind and full steam ahead. It's been odd.

Remember that one nut we had that claimed Trask was basically the new NFL superstar because he was tall?

Or the Iowa St. kid in the 2nd. Or Burden or Egbuka if we trade down. We have ample options rather than spending crazy money. But, as someone accurately pointed out in the RB thread, we rarely make wise decisions in the draft.

Remember our 2nd this year isn't "our" pick. It is closer to the 3rd. The money I can understand. But, I would rather pay Higgins top 5 money that Horn, TBH.

They are likely to go RB early. Have seen them often mocked to go RB in the first or second.

Panthers: We need a RB! Let's taken the best RB available despite injuries in a very weak RB draft! Also, how about in the 2nd round! Also Panthers: Let's pay $6.5 mil on a one year deal to an above average FA RB! Also, let's do this in a RB draft class that is one of the deepest since 2003!

I would say that could be debatable with Jewell. Jewell is actually not that bad. At the bare minimum we have another competent LB.

I do agree that their evaluation of WR's is the worst in the NFL but it's also a tough position to be able to pay premium(or in our case likely premium+) prices to afford.

Curious to see the financials. I think on the surface this is a good pickup.

Do a great job in the draft and we might get a win or two extra and I mean a GREAT job. Mostly it would just fit with the plan to get younger and get more competitive. Start finally building depth outside the OL and extend that to the rest of the roster. Start finally getting some average or above NFL starters. If we can move those goals appreciably forward, then it is a overall net positive. People are just setting themselves up for massive disappointment with the thoughts of winning records, playoff berths, etc. This is a straight up from the foundation building effort, it's just going to take time, effort, patience and above all, competence. So, strap in, it's gonna be a wild ride. Side note: I still am pursuing a sports book that will let me make a 4-5 figure wager with acceptable odds that the Panthers will not have a winning record before the 2030 NFL season. So that's how I actually think this is all gonna go down.
