If we draft a QB, I want Carson Strong
ForJimmy replied to Ricky Spanish's topic in Carolina Panthers
Where did you read Strong’s knee is degenerative? -
If Cross, Icky, and Neal are gone by 6 then trade down might be best. If Cross is there I hope we just take him and have an immediate starter on the left side to pair with BC.
-
If one of those teams grab Hamilton or QB we should be able to get Cross.

Yeah here we are taking about Willis and teams that are looking into him after the Senior Bowl. Interest will peak after pro days and the combine. Willis was on the radar before last year. A few posters on here were wanting us to take him this year before the season started. His 2020 year (along with getting Liberty ranked) caught the attention of scouts.

Niners did it with Lance and the jury is still out. Chiefs did it with Mahomes (paid off), the Bills did with Allen (paid off), Ravens with Lamar (paid off). If you can find a QB with a huge ceiling and the right work ethic it can give your team a exponentially huge return.

Tepper in the War room on draft day.

We would be in so much better shape if we drafted Fields. Just focus on OL in FA/draft and looking at extending Gilmore or Jackson. Start building around your young QB on his rookie contract. Fans would be excited about the potential of our new QB. I still can’t believe we went “all in” on Darnold without a plan B… -

Willis couldn’t start at Auburn and Burrow couldn’t at OSU. Haskins got the nod over him so he transferred. Coaches overlook talent all the time. Hell Brady almost transferred from Michigan because he wasn’t starting his first couple years. https://saturdaytradition.com/michigan-football/tom-brady-says-he-nearly-transferred-out-of-michigan-after-being-low-on-depth-chart/ When a team like Liberty is playing against a team like Ole Miss, the talent on offense and defense isn’t equal. -

I mean there have been plenty of QBs in college elevated by the talent around them. It was one of the reasons teams were skeptical of Alabama QBs, the ones before Tua like McLeroy and McCarron didn’t do much in the pros when the talent level was evened out. Willis and Strong still flashed as players and put up solid numbers on lower tier teams (it’s why they are being considered 1st/2nd rounders playing for Liberty and Nevada). However it’s still a team sport, it’s why Mac Jones looked a lot better his rookie year than Trevor Lawrence. If you surround a player like Willis or Strong with Alabama’s line/weapons do you really not think they will have better years/stats? Willis playing QB for Alabama would have rolled over Ole Miss and Bryce Young with Liberty’s OL and weapons would have struggled. My point was writing off a talented player with lesser talent around him because he got sacked or threw picks against stronger competition doesn’t make much sense. If players are missing blocks and WRs aren’t open what else can a QB do? -
He is definitely a great college QB. Those loop throws will be dangerous in the NFL, as defenders will have a lot more speed. https://www.profootballnetwork.com/grayson-mccall-coastal-carolina-qb-nfl-draft-scouting-report/ This writer is thinking his arm strength is fine, just deep ball accuracy issues because they don’t throw deep often. It’s definitely a college system offense he is in, but then again so was Mahomes. Another name to look out for next year is Will Levi’s out of Kentucky. He is a tough leader with a strong arm playing against top talent. He got hit his last few games and seems to have the talent scouts like. Jefferson out of Arkansas could have a big year too. He was flashing some talent last year as well. It very well could be a loaded class…

https://thedraftnetwork.com/player/grayson-mccall McCall’s weakness is his arm. It seems odd to be low on Pickett’s ability and high on McCall (who has a weaker arm).

I get it, but the counter is Strong had Nevada OL and Nevada weapons all season to work with. If he was playing with top talent like Alabama or UGA, this stat line would be more embarrassing. It’s what holds back Willis also. Willis’s OL couldn’t block bottom tier schools and people wonder why he looked bad against Ole Miss… -
Good call!
-
I think they are high on Willis.
-
Can he play guard too? We need Elf at center one more year to fill all of our OL needs IMO. BC, Zion, Elf, Brown, Moton could work especially if we replace Brown with a solid FA.
-
I agree 100%. Let Horn, Henderson, Bouye, Taylor and maybe a cheap vet hold down the CB spots and Burns/YGM/Fox rotate out for DE. No need to overpay for vets at this stage in our team development. Plus we might get some comps.
-
It’s a little misleading the 206 is total picks and then it is broken down to round 1 only. A lot of it depends on where you pick too. A late 1st rounder on a LB can have good value IMO. Luke was picked high, but I think him being a generational talent makes up for it. We have ignored OL for a while now and it’s shameful. I mean our LT hasn’t been really addressed since Gross retired. We tried with Kalil and Oher, but no luck. Hopefully Fitt/Rhule/whoever is making the calls gives some major attention to the OL soon.
-
If they do then one of the 3 LTs or 2 Pass Rushers should fall to us.
-
Or Darnold??

I’m down for either one of the 3 LTs falling to us or trading down and drafting a QB. -

Where were these fast, athletic QBs in the Super Bowl? Just learning you can’t succeed in the NFL without one… -
That’s kind of how I feel. He is a first rounder, solid QB. If someone drafts him at 12 no one would care, but 6 spots for your starting QB and people freak out. Assuming we can land a talent in FA on the OL, he isn’t the worst pick IMO. Pitt was playing at a high level with him as their leader, if that can translate to the next level if could pay dividends.

DJ’s skillset in a Shanahan offense would be deadly.
-
The scariest thing would be knowing Rhule would get fleeced on the trade and be responsible for developing the players we develop with the picks….
