Personally feels to me a bit misleading without context given they finished closer to middle of the pack (20) than towards the bottom. For example, folks seem to be all-in on the Slowik train and the Texans finished 14th. I'm hoping for Ben Johnson btw, but I don't think Canales (or Raheem Morris) are bad options.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Jimmy Haslem went through Rob Chudzinski, Mike Pettine, Hue Jackson, Gregg Williams, and Freddie Kitchens before landing on Kevin Stefanski. Shad Khan went through Mike Mularkey, Gus Bradley, Doug Marrone, and Urban Meyer before getting Doug Pederson (and that's still a TBD IMO given this past season's flameout). Stephen Ross went through Tony Sparano, Joe Philbin, Adam Gase, and Brian Flores before getting Mike McDaniel. Tepper will get it right eventually just by sheer luck.

While I understand the sentiment, the reality is that HC hiring is a crapshoot. People clowned the Packers for hiring Matt LaFleur who spent one year as a non-playcalling OC for the Rams and then one year as a playcalling OC for the Titans who finished 27th in scoring offense in the one year he was there. He's 56-27 in his tenure. The Bengals were clowned for hiring Zac Taylor who only had one stint as an interim OC 4 years before he was hired and was most recently a QB coach under Sean McVay before being hired. Just because a candidate meets some nebulous "qualified" threshold doesn't mean they will pan out as a success. If Canales is the hire, will he be a success? Who knows. But I don't think his odds of success are any different than Ben Johnson's (who btw is only in his second year as a playcalling OC and everyone wanted him last offseason when he also only had one year of experience as a playcalling OC).

Yep, no surprise given all the smoke about Tilis joining in a leading cap/admin role

We requested an interview, but then didn't even follow through, so not sure where you're getting Tepper has a "hard on" from him. Keep in mind the rumor was that Wilks was targeting Johnson as his OC if he had gotten the HC gig last year also.
-
According to sources, Tepper captained the search for his next GM along with his wife, Nicole, team president Kristi Coleman, Panthers senior assistant coach and longtime NFL head coach Jim Caldwell and Mike Forde, who heads the search firm Sportsology. …

I think with the hiring of Morgan, if Ben Johnson goes elsewhere, we're most likely looking at Dave Canales as the next HC of the Panthers given their connections.

I figured Morris and Canales would get second interviews because they'd satisfy the two external in-person interviews required by the Rooney Rule. I think both are good candidates too. My #1 is still Ben Johnson (or Harbaugh, but seems that ship has sailed), but I'd honestly be happy with someone like Morris, Canales, or even Evero/Callahan.

Note that we HAVE to interview two external minority candidates in-person to satisfy the Rooney Rule, so I'm fairly certain Raheem Morris is going to get a second interview (I'm actually not even that against it, he was hired super young in Tampa, won 10 games his second season, and has worked on both sides of the ball). I bet the other in-person Rooney Rule candidate is Canales (he's hispanic so fulfills the Rooney Rule requirement). And honestly, if Ben Johnson goes elsewhere and Slowik stays in Houston, I wouldn't be all that opposed to either Morris or Canales.

My current guesses as to how these openings pan out: Chargers: Jim Harbaugh Falcons: Bill Belichick Raiders: Antonio Pierce Seahawks: Dan Quinn Commanders: Mike Vrabel or Ben Johnson Titans: Brian Callahan or Bobby Slowik Panthers: Ben Johnson or ???
-
Think the Falcons still have to interview two Rooney Rule candidates in-person before they can hire Belichick, but yeah I think he'll likely end up there. Wouldn't be surprised to see them bring in Leslie Frazier and another currently unemployed "candidate" (like the Raiders did with Kris Richard) so they can move quickly here.

Honestly a rehash and nothing you don't already know. Literally the only thing that was of note was that apparently Brown (GM candidate from NYG) interviewed last weekend. Everything else was just boilerplate stuff you've seen elsewhere.

As far as I know, neither of those 2 guys have scheduled interviews anywhere yet. Slowik has yet to interview with any of the 5 teams that have requested him (Panthers, Falcons, Titans, Seahawks, Commanders). I believe the Panthers are the only ones that have requested Canales so far, but given he was coaching Monday night, it's not a surprise he hasn't interviewed yet (and given they play Sunday, I wouldn't be surprised if he actually doesn't interview this week). edit: Slowik confirms he hasn’t taken any interviews yet

One quibble - currently (NFL) unemployed coaches are allowed to interview in-person. It's why Belichick, Harbaugh, et al have interviewed in person. Additionally, the Raiders have interviewed both Leslie Frazier and Kris Richard in-person as neither of the two are currently employed by NFL teams (and coincidentally, interviewing both in-person satisfies the Rooney Rule and thus they are now free to hire Antonio Pierce as their full-time HC at any point if that's the direction they're going to go).
-
I think if we do end up interviewing a Harbaugh or Belichick type, we'll find out just like we found out about the Frank Smith interview last night - an out of the blue tweet from the official team account. All of our interviews so far are with candidates that are currently employed by teams so we can only do Zoom interviews at this stage. In-person interviews with currently employed coaches can't start until after Sunday.

Rationale sounded a lot like throwing darts at a board. Don't think any of the media folks this time around really know who Tepper has in the #2 spot if/when Johnson goes elsewhere.
-
ugh Tepper pls

Welp. Was hoping for some news on Carolina’s search, not about people in the building.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Vrabel end up in NE or Atlanta
