Source: Panthers Open to Drafting Quarterback With No. 8 Pick
LinvilleGorge replied to NAS's topic in Carolina Panthers
IMO, the Darnold trade was all about reading the tea leaves and seeing that #8 was likely too low to land a QB we like and the trade market to get in position to do so was too rich for our taste. I definitely don't think it takes us out of play on one of those QBs if they happen to be there at #8. We're probably setting ourselves up to try the same approach the Seahawks did. They signed Matt Flynn in free agency after he showed out in GB in a couple of games then hedged that bet by drafting Russell Wilson in the 3rd. The rest is history. Wilson came in and won the job from day one and Matt Flynn pretty much disappeared as a footnote in NFL history. If things don't work out at #8, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see us draft a guy like Kellen Mond or Davis Mills later in the draft. -
Make note of the last line in the post you quoted.

Just moved back to NC from CO within the past year. Lived in CO for 14 years. Pueblo? Yikes. -

It wasn't removed, it was just locked because it was misleading. You posted a thread saying Moss was coming to Carolina. You linked a purely opinion piece that Carolina should look at signing Moss. Long-time posters have gotten temporary bans for this stuff.

What do you guys get out of these misleading thread titles? -
Wow. This dude is about to go into his sixth NFL season. Who would've thought? Hell, good for him.

This. I wouldn't let Darnold being here keep me from drafting one of those guys but I think that trade was made in large part because we don't expect those guys to be there. If it happens, just smile and make the pick anyway. Darnold being here means the rookie wouldn't have to be pressed into an immediate starting role if he isn't ready and we figure out what to do with Darnold after the season.

If all 3 still available at #8, who do you take?

Sewell all day long. Positional value matters. -
Gotta love it when posters think every thought that passes through their skull is worthy of a new thread...

I agree. Maybe he'll end up being great but from a physical talent standpoint I really struggle to project him to the NFL.

This is what every team claims to do. It's not like you're ever gonna have a team come out and say, "Listen, we know he wasn't the best player available but we're really fuging desperate here!" though that approach clearly plays out in every draft.

I'm really hoping the Niners draft Jones. One, because it'll be hilarious. Two, because I'm gonna be nervous if we're on the clock at 8 and Jones is still available.

WY isn't legal. Montana just went legal. New Mexico isn't legal. Idaho is the most Nazi cannabis state in the country. South Dakota isn't legal. Nebraska isn't far behind Idaho. Colorado is home base for the Broncos, but it's only a fraction of the footprint of that fanbase. -
Two ways to look at it. You say that means the conference is weak, but it's just as easy to say that the conference isn't ridiculously top heavy like the SEC is.

The footprint of that fanbase is huge. All of CO, WY, UT, NM. You have to go a long way from Denver in any direction to get to the next NFL team. The Front Range of Colorado is probably the most geographically isolated major metro area in the U.S. in terms of proximity to the nearest other major metro area. -
Because honestly Darnold is a long shot. I honestly don't think his presence will keep us from drafting a QB we like. I think adding him was all about 1) moving on from Teddy and 2) reading the tea leaves and seeing that #8 is likely too low to land a QB we like. Even if we don't draft a QB at #8, I think a QB like Kellen Monds or Davis Mills is pretty likely.

The ACC had the third most active NFL players last season (215) behind the SEC (339) and Big Ten (253). The Big 12 was the bottom feeder of the power five conferences with 131.

1. Fields 2. Lance 3. Trade down 4. Sewell 5. Slater 6. Please for the love of god trade down

Considering the conversation in this thread is about this draft it's of peak relevancy.

Five top 25 teams in the final ESPN college football poll. Yeah, the ACC is just trash. LOL! https://www.espn.com/college-football/rankings

Oh wee mayne.

I think he probably goes in the 3rd. I just don't know that he's a great fit for us due to his bust potential. He'd make sense as a roll of the dice for a better team, but we need players with those first three picks. We don't need pie in the sky prospects.

I'm intrigued by the Cincinnati kid, but I think he's likely pure boom or bust.
