Will drafting a rookie QB save Rhule?
LinvilleGorge replied to firefox1234's topic in Carolina Panthers
It's possible. If he drafts a rookie and that rookie shows promise and we show improvement on the field and get to around .500ish and legitimately compete for a playoff berth while improving throughout the season then yeah, I think that would buy him another year. And honestly I'm alright with that. In that case I honestly think he would've earned that. But do I think drafting a rookie should automatically give him a bye for this season? Hell no. He should absolutely be coaching for his job this year. -
Define "bust". Honestly, given his enormous hype if he doesn't develop into an MVP caliber QB then yeah, he's kind of a bust.

If you're a college coach recruiting kids then yeah, your relationship with high school programs matters a LOT. I think it matters a whole lot less for NFL coaches. Now if I'm an NFL coach, I absolutely want good ties with the top programs simply as an avenue to get good info on their draft prospects but I honestly don't give a single fug about my relationship with low level programs. At the end of the day, if I want your guys I'll draft them. I don't need them to make the decision to come here.

You only have so many scouts and there's a LOT of college programs. If no one there is high on our boards we very well may be better off sending those scouts elsewhere. No one would care about Jackson State's coach "shaming" NFL teams for not attending his pro day if that coach wasn't an NFL HOFer. I still don't.

My top 5 QBs go: Howell Corral Willis Pickett Ridder I honestly think only the top 3 have legit starter potential and Willis is boom or bust.
-
It'd be like giving the rest of the league a head's up on who you absolutely do NOT want.
-
I was pounding the table for Fields.
-
If you take Willis a year after passing on Fields I'm just baffled.

Oh, we know there's an order. Just ask Rhule. Pickett Pickett PickettPickettPickett

Yep. Five ACC football teams being ranked was a farce but basketball was highly underrated. Post season play has told the truth on both.

Panthers hold prelim talks with Mayfield reps
LinvilleGorge replied to Jmac's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think he could be good to enough if he wasn't so cocky. Huge difference between cocky and confident. Cocky = thinking you're so good you can't possibly fail. No one in the NFL is THAT good - particularly at the QB position. If you don't put in the work and have the right mental approach you're gonna fail. -
Observation: Panthers want to Draft a QB but...
LinvilleGorge replied to Doc Holiday's topic in Carolina Panthers
I doubt that too they may just not be seeing the answers they seek at the top of the 1st. Especially for the Giants with that recent swing and miss on Daniel Jones that virtually everyone considered a significant reach. If it works out you're brilliant (see Josh Allen). If it doesn't, you get to hear "told ya so's" for years. They're firmly in the latter scenario. -

The Giants and Texans have been signaling pretty hard that they're not considering QB high on the draft. Maybe it's BS maybe it's not. -
He's been dragged kicking, screaming, and playing like poo deep into the playoffs twice by a really good, well coached team around him.
-
If they actually have an offer of two 2nds in hand they should take it because that's absolute highway robbery for Jimmy G.
-
Which one was supported by a decent team and the greatest coach of all time? Landing spot matters, especially early on.
-
If I was in their position, I would've been at the pro day as part of a smokescreen effort but I would've given myself away when I dosed off in the stands as he was throwing.

Honestly, if Mayfield had Darnold's attitude he'd probably have an extension in Cleveland. Darnold's a good dude, he's just an awful QB. Mayfield has shown he can be a good QB but he's cocky as hell and I'm not sure that cockiness will ever allow him to be coached into being consistently good. -

I can understand arguing that we shouldn't pursue Mayfield. I'm not arguing that we should. But our fans have quickly forgotten just how atrocious Darnold is. Mayfield's TD:INT ratio is 92:56. Darnold a is 54:52. Darnold could never have a 3500 yard season with 26 TDs vs. 8 INTs. He was throwing double digit INTs even in college. -

Oh, he's definitely better than that. -

Wanting and getting are two different things. -
If you think he's unimpressive in good weather, watch him in the rain.

An old Darnold thread bump from a year ago and the vibe is identical. Don't do this.
