Once the Niners made it pretty clear they were holding onto Jimmy G, I thought it was obvious they were targeting Lance. Having Jimmy G means they don't have to feel pressured to play Lance too early. Hanging onto Jimmy G plus Shanny's affinity for QBs who can present a threat with their legs just screamed Lance to me. The Mac Jones rumors just never added up to me. He just doesn't fit the mold of a Shanny QB. I just couldn't see Shanny willing to give up a king's ransom to jump up to draft a guy who seems to be the opposite of what he really wants in a QB. Asking a guy to come in and play as a rookie coming from a D1-AA program seems like a disaster waiting to happen, regardless of talent level. It's a huge jump from college to pro. It's a HUGE jump from D1-AA to pro, especially at QB. I know Chinn did it and should've won the DROY award, but we tailored a role for him in our D that allowed him to be comfortable with his current skill set. You can't do that as readily for a QB. If you're not prepared to read a defense and deal with the speed of the game it isn't going to be pretty. Lance is an athlete and he can run, but he's not Cam. There's a reason he didn't run pre-draft. If the rumors were true that he could run 4.5, he would've ran. He ran a confirmed 4.92 in high school. I don't see a guy going from 4.92 to 4.5 while also gaining about 40 pounds. That just doesn't seem realistic. I'm curious to see how Lance develops and I do think he has the talent to be a franchise NFL QB and I also think he landed in a near ideal situation. We'll just have to see how it works out. I'm definitely not ready to crown him based on one play in a preseason game.

No, because honestly I don't care. I paid little attention to Lance because there was no indication we had any interest and I always thought he was the Niners' trade up target anyway so I just never saw him as a real option. I just looked at the boxscore because I saw a Shanny quote that was less than glowing saying that Lance "did some good, did some bad" so I was curious and it was like, "Oh... yeah, I see." Based on the media hype and some of the talk I'd seen I just assumed the guy lit it up like the 4th of July.

I despised both moves, but IMO Darnold has the talent to be the guy IF he can put it together between the ears. I doubt he can, but I can at least have a sliver of hope for this move. Teddy simply didn't have the prerequisite talent level. I couldn't envision any scenario where he could be the guy.

It was an awesome play, but the boxscore shows him going 5/14 overall? Might be a tad early to crown him just yet. That's a 36% completion rate.

The only ones that matter are the ones who were available at #8. Lawrence, Wilson, and Lance were long gone and out of reach unless we were willing to completely sell the farm.

Except all the people who for some reason we're convinced they were trading up for Mac Jones. That was one strong rumor I never bought.

The ball just jumps out of Wilson's hand. He may or may not work out, but if he busts it won't be because of lack of arm talent or slow delivery.

Mike Glennon's neck is truly impressive. He and Smitty probably stand shoulder to shoulder but Glennon's neck is like 14" long.

That system has changed a lot over time and every QB coming out of one of the powerhouse programs plays with huge talent advantages everywhere.

I definitely wanted zero part of McD. Living in CO and having box tickets at Mile High (via work) I can tell you that McD was every bit the poo show that Lane Kiffen was for the Raiders, the Broncos just didn't have an Al Davis to have everything played out in the media.

They need to roll with Lock. He has the talent to potentially develop into the answer. Teddy doesn't. Playing Teddy is waving the white towel. Either Lock is the answer or they're heavily evaluating '22 QB draft prospects.

Not just that, but still a huge need at the most important position on the roster. Tepper has said that the NFL is a .500 league and that you need a head coach, GM, and QB to break out of that mold. If we whiffed on our opportunity to add a legit franchise QB and the guy we did swing on flops Tepper might start to question whether he has any of those three pieces in place. I don't think they'd be fired but I do think the seat would be hot and if they didn't solve the QB problem next off-season they very well might be out after next year.

The LBs are definitely a weak link. Ultimately, I think the D goes as far as the DL can carry it. Our secondary is still young and won't hold up well if there isn't a strong pass rush. We really need Shaq to start playing like the All-Pro the Panthers clearly think he'll become and paid him to be.

If Darnold flops and Fields hits... oh wee mayne. The rumors that Tepper was pushing for Fields had better not be true. When you go against what your boss wants, you better be damn sure that you're gonna be right.

I feel pretty good about our edge rushers and DL as a whole. I'm definitely not terrified about our secondary but I'm also not sure how good they're going to be THIS year.

Though I do think that Arnold will become a higher priority in the red zone.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. Like I said, I'm not expecting Greg Olsen. But I do think they're going to be good enough to at least not be a weakness. We saw Ian Thomas wasn't getting it don't so we signed a mid-level FA who is primarily a receiver and we drafted a mid-round rookie who is primarily a blocker. Cool. Hopefully Arnold will improve as a blocker and hopefully Tremble will develop as a receiver. Maybe they can each help the other out in those departments.

I'm confident that our WRs are very good. If they're held back by the QB and/or OL, that's not on them. All they can do is run their routs and catch the balls that come their direction and I'm confident in them doing a good job of that.

Honestly, yeah. There's been enough positive reports about Arnold and Tremble that I feel pretty good about TE. Are they gonna re-create prime Greg Olsen? Highly doubtful but I think we're decent there. It's the weakest link of our non-QB skill positions, but IMO that's more about our strength at WR and RB than it is a glaring weakness at TE.

This is the way to handle it. If you want to create a personal echo chamber, the ignore function allows you to pretty much do that.

Disagreement isn't toxic. Cordial conversations isn't toxic. Taking football disagreement personally and lashing out creates the toxic environment.

Agreed. My concern is that we seem to be falling into the habit of overpaying hoping that we're right and everyone else is wrong. If it works, you're brilliant. If it doesn't, it's not gonna be pretty. We'll see how it works out. Gettleman did some brilliant dumpster diving early on in his tenure. As time went on, it worked out less and less.
