  1. His admin assistant, his PR person and his trainer. And Jimmy Johnson was by far the exception and not the rule. Not to mention the fact JJ left Miami for more than just the opportunity to coach the Cowboys. His Miami University team was one the most crooked programs in the country at the time. And the Cowboys haven't won sh!t since.
  2. Potential is limited by the playbook. Nick Foles won a Super Bowl over the Tom Brady Patriots. Trubisky went to the post season with the Bears. Fields is supposed to be a franchise QB. None of those 3 facts look further from reality right now. And Matt Rhule is far worse than Nagy.
  3. https://www.nhl.com/hurricanes/news/hoiday-break-come-early-reflecting-on-the-canes-joyful-start/c-329197926 RALEIGH, NC. - Late Monday night the NHL announced an amendment to the current league schedule, opting to begin the mandated holiday break two days ahead of its originally planned date of December 23. The league elected to make the decision after a slew of games had been postponed over the last several days due to COVID-19 Protocols. While the Canes were not impacted by this latest announcement game-wise - their three games that were scheduled to take place between Sunday and Thursday had already been pulled off the table for the time being - it did allow them to practice one final time Tuesday before letting the players, coaches and staff head into their couple of days off. The holiday break is commonly looked at as a turning point in the season, no longer the start to the campaign, not quite yet the midway point. Carolina has played 29 games thus far this regular season, which equates to just over 35% of their planned 82-game schedule. Currently standing 21-7-1 in those 29 games, accompanied by the accomplishments of having the most wins in the league, the best win percentage, best road record and fewest cumulative losses, there's plenty of joy to celebrate when it comes to what they've been able to achieve so far. Sprinkle on top the fact that they've already hit triple digits man games lost due to injury or COVID-19 Protocols, it's quite impressive. "It's hard not to be proud of the guys and the way we play every night," Head Coach Rod Brind'Amour began. "So, regardless of where we are in the standings - and that's obviously the number one thing we look at - good record or not, I'd be proud of the way that we've played up until this point. We've had a lot of different guys in the lineup, different things happening, but at least until this point, we've played hard and we've given ourselves a chance to win every night." Recent events have put a strong emphasis on unique roster changes coming into play, however, this unfortunately hasn't been a new trend for the club. In fact, of the 30 different players to wear a Hurricanes sweater this season, only six have played in all 29 games. Further emphasizing that the team's success is a collective effort, not the byproduct of just a few key players, there are several important areas through the first two-plus months that have guided them to their 21 wins. At the moment the team sits tied with the Calgary Flames for the fewest goals allowed (62) league-wide and the team's penalty kill ranks second in the NHL with its 88.7% success rate. An integral part of both facets, Frederik Andersen knows that as enjoyable as the start has been, there's more in store. "We're among the top in our division and I think we've got to be happy about that, but we keep trying to get better. We're focused on the day-to-day, that's how we've been approaching every day and are trying to get better, no matter what's going on tomorrow," he shared. "I think that's going to help us through this time as well, having different schedules and not knowing what's too far ahead. It's good practice for what we have to do and what we have to focus on." Currently tied for the most wins among goaltenders in the NHL, while also holding a share of the lead in goals against average (1.93) and posting a top ten save percentage (.930), the first season as a Hurricane for the 32-year-old Danish netminder is off to a fantastic start. Perhaps an even more fitting way to look at it is that Andersen also leads the league in assists by goaltender with his three. Is that important? That's up for debate, but even in the areas that aren't as imperative, the team seems to be right atop those leaderboards as well. As followers and participants of the sport alike know, you can't win the Stanley Cup in December, but you can have played yourself out of a chance for it by then. Someone who knows that very well is another first-year member of the team, Derek Stepan. With over 100 NHL playoff games already under his built, there's no lack of understanding that the start is merely that, and the finish is a long ways away. "After break, we have to hit the ground running. Something this group has always been able to do is to keep the foot on the gas pedal, no matter what happened the night before. We have to get right back to work and that's the mindset you have to have," Stepan said after Tuesday's skate, which only featured 12 skaters in total, furthering the point that the work continues no matter what. "The pre-break games don't really mean anything because post-break, everybody is going to ramp it up as we get into the second half and playoff time. Those games are going to be even harder to win than the first 25-30." There will be no such work to be done over the next few days though, as the only allowed items that the team can complete are mental and physical recovery. They'll then return to work on Sunday, December 26, where COVID-19 testing will resume and practice can take place after 2 p.m. If all comes back clear then, the team's next order of business would be a meeting with the Florida Panthers at PNC Arena, Monday, December 27 at 7 p.m.
  4. You mean, "When." TB12 isn't going to be kind after the physical beat down he took from the Saints.
  5. Minnesota nor Cleveland will fire their HC. Chicago, Houston, NYG are pretty solid guesses to go.
  6. I'd take Luke, Morgan, Beason and TD to start my 3-4 defense, knowing with those 4 on the field I could win a lot of football games regardless how bad the offense was.
  7. I started watching hockey in the late 70s - early 80s in San Diego when the Gulls were part of the WHL (Western Hockey League). Back then there were a couple players who had grandfathered the helmet rule and didn't wear one. I enjoyed the pace of the game, relatively few rules and penalties and stoppages. When I moved to Greensboro in 1992, I began following the Monarchs, which were disbanded when the Whalers moved to Greensboro in 95 or 96. Monarch tickets I could afford at the time. When the NHL came to town, it was a little more money than I could pay at the time. Fast forward to 1998-2000 when we were living in Asheville and the UHL had the Asheville Smoke. Although they were only around for 4 seasons, they posted a winning record in 3 of the 4 years. From 1998-2000 the head coach was Keith Gretzky and Brent Gretzky was a center on that team. I had season tickets for the 2 seasons I lived there- they were $110 for the entire season (28 home games). I was a Blackhawk fan until about 2014 after we relocated from Virginia to eastern NC. From then on I've been a Canes guy, although I still have a soft spot for Chicago. Don't get me wrong, I want the Canes to trounce them, but I wish them well. During the 2018-2019 playoffs, I was honored by the organization for my military service during Game 4 of the New York Islanders series, which the Canes won, sweeping the series.
  8. Somewhere fans will support the team no matter how bad they are. Somewhere fans, like Cleveland years ago or the Saints from the 70s, filled the stadium week-in and week-out regardless.
  9. Just because the assist from Stepan to Drury @ 5:31 of the 3rd period is a thing of beauty. And because Drury had set up Stepan for a breakaway earlier that Stepan couldn't get past Quick.
  10. https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/2250079/nhl-power-rankings-a--for-all-32-teams-this-holiday-season 1. Carolina Hurricanes (21-7-1) Previous rank: 8th Continued success for their supporting cast. The Hurricanes have performed well this season, especially with some key players in COVID-19 protocol. Even before Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov landed on the list, Teuvo Teravainen, Vincent Trocheck, Martin Necas, and Nino Niederreiter contributed enough to keep the NHL's new best team rolling.
  11. Schedule shows us at home against the Panthers on the 27th. Next would be home vs. Montreal on the 30th, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
  12. They're just further down the list: Martinook is still listed as return unknown, Chatfield is on IR (unknown) and Necas is return unknown also.

  14. Brendan Smith was added to the COVID list within the past couple hours.
  15. And I'll have to disagree with you regarding a couple of scenarios. Fast is playing the best hockey of his career at 30 years old and he's only getting $2M a year. A bargain for what he brings to the ice every night. Stepan is a one-year rental. Everyone knows he was brought here as a veteran presence alongside Staal to be the leadership and example for the young guys. So he'll be gone, but only represents $1.35M. Nino is going to get paid and whether or not the Canes are the ones paying him will be his choice. My guess is should he want anything north of $6.25M, he'll be gone. Trocheck is in the same position. I believe he'll get an offer from Carolina, but it might not be enough for him to stay. KK will get Vinny's line when Vincent leaves. Stepan and Trocheck will/can be replaced with Drury, Jarvis and KK. RFAs who will get offers: all of them. TDA, Bear, KK, Lorentz and Necas. I don't know how you say, "No" to any of them.
  16. "Saints are where we should be....." In New Orleans? Sounds good to me. When do they leave?
  17. Burn BOA to the ground. Fire the entire coaching staff. Relocate the team.
  18. His entry level contract was signed on July 7, 2021. So, yeah, there's a huge consideration depending on whether the games he played prior to his entry level contract was signed, just as you mentioned. And, if the World Cup games are included, he's played 75 games if you count Vaxjo, WC, Chicago and Carolina.
  19. If the NHL is going to continue to schedule games for teams that are short-handed, they need to make some concessions with regard to minor league call-ups, like not counting their games against the exemption rule, for example. Or, they need to allow teams to call up enough players to fill out a game-day roster without any salary cap or minor league reassignment ramifications. The league did really well last season with COVID, but they're falling on their faces this year. All that said, the next time Drury is called up will be his last call up- he'll be here for good. The Canes will have to find a way to fit him in without losing key pieces to the roster.
  20. https://www.nhl.com/hurricanes/news/canes-reassign-drury-to-chicago/c-329156660 RALEIGH, NC - Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has reassigned forward Jack Drury to the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League (AHL). Drury, 21, has recorded 16 points (7g, 9a) in 23 AHL games with Chicago this season and ranks tied for fourth on the team in goals and fifth in points. The 5'11", 174-pound forward has scored two goals in two NHL games in 2021-22, becoming the fifth player in franchise history and the third player since relocation to score in each of his first two career NHL contests. Drury tallied 30 points (10g, 20a) in 41 games with Vaxjo Lakers of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) during his first professional season in 2020-21, earning selection as a finalist for the league's Rookie of the Year and helping Vaxjo capture the Le Mat Trophy as SHL champions. Prior to turning professional, Drury played two seasons of college hockey at Harvard from 2018-20, posting 63 points (29g, 34a) in 60 games. He also earned 77 points (28g, 49a) in 100 USHL games with Waterloo from 2016-18, serving as captain in his second season with the Black Hawks. The New York, N.Y., native has represented the United States at numerous international tournaments, winning a silver medal at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship and a bronze medal at the 2021 IIHF World Championship. Drury was selected by Carolina in the second round, 42nd overall, of the 2018 NHL Draft. --------------------------------------------- This was a move to protect him.
  21. Maybe he plays for Necas if Marty is out with a concussion. Good problem to have, no? More talent than you've got room for?
  22. Tomorrow's back-to-back with Nashville is off. We'll see if Ottawa happens on Thursday.
