I was a little disappointed when Wake lost at Miami, but Miami is probably the best team in the conference right now.

How close are you to checking out?
Davidson Deac II replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
I am 57 years old, figure I have about 20 more years left if I take care of myself. So I will check out 2042 I guess. -
Could be that Rhule is a personable and likeable person, just not a very good NFL coach.

If we don't resign Jackson and Reddick....
Davidson Deac II replied to musicman's topic in Carolina Panthers
I don't see us resigning Jackson. We have so much invested in the secondary, just can't afford it. And I am not sure he wants to come back. He has seen 3 years of dysfunction here and next year is likely to be more of the same, even if we get a new coach. He might want a fresh start. So hopefully we do get a pick out of it. -
Panthers taking offers for Cmac in the off-season
Davidson Deac II replied to Leotiger's topic in Carolina Panthers
Is there an article stating this? Seems like its just someone's opinion. That being said, we probably will listen to offers. -
Our offense looked good in Rhule's first game against the Raiders last year. But with a couple of exceptions, it has gotten progressively worse over the last two years. I see no reason to hope it will get better next year, unless we luck up and draft the next Tom Brady with a late round pick.

True. Which is a big reason it is so hard to determine how well a college player, especially a qb, will do in the NFL, where the talent is more equally distributed. Which is also why I won't mind if we take Pickett. He might not be good, or he might be the next Drew Brees. Of course, we have been relatively lucky the two times we picked a qb in the first. Kerry Collins was a adequate qb, (although not a good person). And Cam was very good. Lets hope our next first round pick nets similar results, but the next guy is able to stick around a little longer.

He was also on one of the more loaded college offenses of all time. That helps those numbers you reference just a little. How many receivers from that team are now playing in the NFL? Two first round picks and a second. Several offensive linemen and tight ends. They had almost an NFL level offense going up against College players. Meanwhile, there is a pretty decent chance that not a single Pitt receiver will be in the league. Their tight end might. But its a given that Pickett had a lot less talent around him. Imagine how good Pickett would look with that level of talent around him?

Seems to me most of the "attacks" have been "wait until the panthers offense screws up and we can get an easy score" I will say that we struggle against balanced offenses, but then with the way the rules favor the offense these days, that is going to happen with 95% of all defenses. IMO, the Aints probably have the best defense in the NFC, definitely the best in our division. Yet they got lit up by the Eagles/Bills and to a lesser extent by Cowboys consecutively at one point this year. This isn't the old days. Good defenses can give you a shot at winning, they can't dominate like they did in the 70s and 80s. And our d gave us a shot to win in multiple games this year, and for the most part, the offense failed to take advantage.

I don't know if Pickett will be a good quarterback. The fact that he only had one good year is irrelevant imo. Some people just take longer to get better than others. The draft profiles and the assessments don't matter to me that much. They are wrong more often than they are right. All you have to do is look at the current group of elite qb's in the NFL, to see how wrong those assessments can be. Best qb's in the NFC are a sixth round pick (Brady), a fourth round pick (Prescott), a third round pick (Wilson), and a late first round pick (AR). And one top pick (Kyler Murray). I won't be disappointed if we take Pickett regardless of what others say. But I am concerned that the current staff can't really prepare him for the NFL. He may be good, or he may not. But if he does have the raw materials to be a good NFL qb, I hope we bring in a very good QB coach to teach him the ins and outs of the job. Or better yet, maybe we take him, sit him for a year until Rhule gets canned.

The Bucs won't rest starters, will play to win
Davidson Deac II replied to LinvilleGorge's topic in Carolina Panthers
We will only get about 10 points. I think the Bucs would score more than that even with the backups. Regarding Rhule's job, I think a decision has already been made, and I doubt this game will have an impact one way or the other. -
He was never very good, at least from an NFL perspective. Like many college qb's, he looked good because he was on a team that had a lot more talent than the teams he played against. When he got to the NFL, (where the talent is more evenly distributed), he looked a lot worse.

So far, only one of last year's qb's are any good.

Is this catastrophic? This sounds catastrophic.
Davidson Deac II replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
I imagine they mean something catastrophic like being accused of kicking his players, right after being caught at a bar with a hot young girl, while the team and wife are not around. -
What are you going to do if Rhule turns it around next year?
Davidson Deac II replied to Fan01's topic in Carolina Panthers
Fwiw, it could happen. Draft a qb that turns into the next Tom Brady, then get extremely lucky with our late round picks that give us some good offensive linemen. But the odds aren't good. -

Hiring bad coaches happens. Almost all franchises have a number of coaches they wish they hadn't hired. Normally, they get fired after 2-3 years and the franchise moves on. But if Fields or Jones ends up being a good long term qb, the franchise could in theory be kicking itself for years over this move.

Brown almost pulled a Ricky Bobby. He definitely isn't right upstairs. Reminds me a little of Charles Haley, although Haley tended to keep it together on the field at least.
-
Definitely. A rookie qb is a rookie qb regardless of age. 2 years or 4 years in college doesn't really prepare you for the NFL.
-
Personally, IF I did draft a qb like Pickett or Howell, he sits the entire first year, ala Mahomes. Then spend every remaining pick on the oline, spend next years picks on the oline, spend most of our free agent dollars on the oline. In the meantime, throw Darnold out there since we have to pay him an arm and a leg next year.
-
The reverse is also true. Our qb's are atrocious, regardless of who is on the oline. Give Sam time to throw, and the number of interceptions go up exponentially.
