Getting to know…

James Anderson, linebacker

Background: Taken by the Panthers in the third round of the 2006 draft. Had seven sacks in his career at Virginia Tech.

What you need to know: Has been a backup linebacker for much of his Panthers career, although he started two games in his rookie season, when he had two sacks and 17 tackles … Is mostly used on special teams … A studio art major at Virginia Tech, he designed the Hornet mascot at his high school (Deep Creek) in Chesapeake, Va.

Observations

There were lots of children from summer camps watching Wednesday's morning session (the Cub Scouts came in the afternoon). Running back DeAngelo Williams walked off the field with one of the campers, allowing him to wear his shoulder pads and jersey. It was a cute sight, but the kid quickly took the heavy, sweaty gear off in the mid-day heat.

Quarterback Matt Moore, a 22 {+n}{+d}-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Angels in 2002, mimicked fielding ground balls while the Panthers warmed up Wednesday morning.

Tight ends coach Geep Chryst to his troops during a drill: “When the pressure's coming (from a defender), it's not a sound thing. It's a feel thing.”

Quick hits

Rookie Larry Beavers dropped a punt in the morning, drawing the ire of special teams coach Danny Crossman, who told Beavers to pick the ball up more quickly after it hit the ground. Beavers fielded the next punt cleanly.

Quinton Teal had a highlight in the morning, intercepting a Matt Moore pass and returning it for a touchdown. He had to be urged to take it the whole way by defensive coordinator Ron Meeks, though.

Steve Smith made a nice, leaping catch over the middle, punctuating it with an emphatic spike. The crowd loved it.

Rookie running back Jamall Lee, who played collegiately at Bishop's in Canada, had a tough morning, fumbling on a run and dropping a pass.

Rookie linebacker Anthony Heygood, a free agent from Purdue, returned an interception for a touchdown in the afternoon. He had receiver Jason Carter, for whom the pass was intended, chasing and grabbing for him all the way down the field.
