10 & 0, the two most exciting stats of all.

But yesterday's game was filled with lots of other interesting stats too.  Here's a thread to post interesting game statistics, highlights & analysis.

I'll try to get some original tables & analysis posted this evening.

BBR's stats & superlatives post is must-reading this week.  Panthers were busy re-writing their record books yesterday.  Here are a few highlights:

THE PANTHERS

–Allowed just 14 rushing yards, the fewest in franchise history (25 vs. Jets on 10/15/1995).

–Forced five fumbles, their most in a single game.

–Scored 27 points off turnovers and have now outscored opponents 90-15 off turnovers this season. The Panthers have turned their 25 takeaways into 10 touchdowns and seven field goals.

–Scored a team-record 31 points in the first half.

–Scored at least 20 points in their 10th straight game, the longest such streak in franchise history.

–Have scored 299 points, the most in team history through 10 games.

–Went 4-for-5 in the red zone and are 19-for-27 inside the 20 over their past six games.

–Rushed for at least 100 yards in their 21st straight game before the Seahawks joined them at 21 later Sunday afternoon. The last team to put together a streak this long was the 1977-78 Houston Oilers (23 games).

–Sacked Redskins QB Kirk Cousins a season-high five times. He had been sacked just 12 times in his previous nine games.

–Limited Cousins and Titans QB Marcus Mariota to 392 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions a week after their respective games against the Saints in which they totaled 695 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions.

–Won their 14th straight regular-season game, extending a team record and the longest active streak in the NFL.

–Won their 9th straight home game, the longest active streak in the NFL.

USA Today:  10 Triumphant Facts

http://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/11/carolina-panthers-winning-streak-stats-facts-triumphant-10-0-how-many-teams-super-bowl

1. Only 15 teams have reached 10-0 before.

On Sunday, the Carolina Panthers moved to 10-0 on the season. They’re the 16th team to get to double-digit wins without a defeat in the Super Bowl era. All of those teams have made the playoffs — obviously.

2. Odds are, the Panthers will have their record snapped before reaching 13-0.

Screen Shot 2015-11-22 at 5.31.08 PM

Of the 15 teams to get to 10-0, eight had perfection snapped at 12-0 or earlier. Also, going deep into the season without a loss is a new-ish trend. Of the 16 seasons (with the Patriots trying to make it 17 on Monday night), 11 have happened in 1990 or later.

3. There’s a 40% chance a 10-0 team will win the Super Bowl.

Since the start of the Super Bowl, six of the 15 teams to start 10-0 won the Super Bowl. They’re the 1972 Dolphins, 1985 Bears, 1990 Giants, 1991 Redskins, 1998 Broncos and 2009 Saints. (Weird that six of the 15 occurrences of 10-0 have happened this century, but only one of those teams won the Super Bowl. That’s 16.7%. Before 2000, the odds of a 10-0 winning the Super Bowl was 55.5%. Parity?)

4. The Panthers have the third-longest regular-season winning streak in NFC history.

Loved our Run D yesterday.  14 yards.  WOW WOW WOW

2. RUN DEFENSE WAS HISTORICALLY GOOD: The Panthers’ run defense was impenetrable Sunday. Washington ran 12 times for 14 yards – the fewest total rushing yards Carolina has ever allowed.

At halftime, the Redskins had just three rushing yards. They were running into a brick wall, and when they found themselves trailing by multiple scores, they became completely one-dimensional.

"Anytime you can make a team one-dimensional, it makes our job a lot easier," linebacker Luke Kuechlyicon-article-link.gif said. "A lot of that has to do with the offense, too. They put points on the board, and we put ourselves ahead and they had to throw the ball. (Passing) was all they could really do."

An explanation for why the LB tackle numbers were lower than normal...
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2591998-redskins-vs-panthers-carolina-grades-notes-and-quotes/page/2

Defensive Line

Mario Addison had 1.5 sacks, Kyle Love and Kony Ealy had one each and Ryan Delaire added an extra half-sack as the Panthers’ defensive line regularly pressured Kirk Cousins.  Jared Allen had a couple of quarterback hits, though he never actually got a sack.  The defensive line also held Washington to just 14 yards rushing on 12 carries—or just 1.2 yards per attempt.  That’s going to help win a lot of football games.

Linebackers

A.J. Klein led the team in tackles with six, Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly each recovered a fumble and the linebackers swarmed, taking away the middle of the field.  It wasn’t a major statistical day, mostly because the running backs who would normally lead to linebacker tackles couldn’t get out of the backfield.

Cam is hot hot hot:

One week after setting a personal best in consecutive completions to start a game, Cam Newton once again set personal records with an explosive first half.

Newton’s first-half line was 16-of-24 for 187 yards and four touchdowns.  Newton had never thrown for four touchdowns in a game before, much less the first half, but he’s continued his career-best season, with his improved accuracy and decision-making, especially in the red zone, paying massive dividends.

That’s both a career high and a franchise record.  The previous team record for first-half touchdowns was three, which Kerry Collins set against the San Francisco 49ers in 1996 and Steve Beuerlein tied against the 49ers in 1999.  Newton’s previous high had just been two.

In the first half of the last two games, Newton is now 28-of-37 for 313 yards and five touchdowns.  He’s getting off the blocks lightning-hot, allowing the defense to play more aggressively and setting up room for the running game.  He’s been good all season, but he’s dialed things up to an entirely new level the past two weeks.

Some stats from the Skins side of things:

http://realredskins.com/2015/11/23/need-to-know-notes-and-numbers-from-redskins-panthers/

—The Redskins rushed for 14 yards, the second fewest in a game in team history. They ran for 10 yards in a 1994 game against the Bucs.

—Cam Newton threw four touchdown passes in the first half, the most ever thrown in the first half against the Redskins. Randall Cunningham threw four touchdown passes in the second half of a game in 1989.

    • if Jaycee gets hurt we are screwed.  I know the board thinks we are another year away, but I think we're closer, and I'd love to get a FA corner.    Constantly losing destroys a teams confidence and desire.  Winning helps build the team...the lockerroom gets confidence, and energy breeds off that.  I think the team will develop more as a unit when we win more.  And that will move us forward exponentially.   The Saints comment after we beat them the second time last year...."that's not the same team we played earlier in the season" is true.  The players bought into Canales, even those who went through the Rhule bullshit.  We just missed out on beating the defending Super Bowl champs last year.  Our WR and RB rooms are stacked.  Our big problem was the DL and we certainly addressed that this year.    Go ahead and build on defensive depth, get another CB.  Let's go for a winning record this year, it will help build our culture.  Finally a new culture.  It's been missing since Riverboat.
    • Yeah we would just hate a guy who put up 3900 yards 28 tds just a year off an Achilles injury. I'll just point out that Rodgers yards and TDs last year exceeded Joe Flaccos CAREER BEST season in his prime.
