Week 15 WIN against the NY Giants - Stats & Analysis

Whew... that one was a thriller that none of us wanted to see.   I confess to wondering for about 10 seconds late in the 4th qtr after the Giants tied it whether I had become a jinx, leaving Africa and flying to Charlotte.  I mean, after all, we were a perfect 13 & 0 with me 4,000+ miles away...  but then I saw the look on Cam's face, and I knew we were going to win!  Very glad for that W!

Hopefully this much too close "come from ahead" win (as I saw some calling it on twitter yesterday) will be something that sharpens & strengthens our team for the playoff run as we learn from our mistakes and realize we can't get complacent.

14 & 0!!!  One of only 4 teams in the NFL ever to do it.  The only team in the NFC ever to go 14-0.  Awesome!  One of the BEST-EVER Christmas gifts for those of us fans about to celebrate Christmas on Friday.

Keep pounding all!  We've still got 5 games ahead of us to win!

Here are a few stats & "nuggets" as reported by BBR in the "rapid reaction" entry yesterday:

NOTABLE NUGGETS

The Panthers:

–Are just the fourth NFL team to start 14-0 (’72 Dolphins, ’07 Patriots, ’09 Colts).

–Have scored 449 points. The most they’ve scored in a season was 421 in 1999.

–Are 18-3 in December since 2011.

–Finished off a sweep of the NFC East. They also went 4-0 against the AFC South this year.

Peter King can't stop gushing about Cam.  Here's the latest praise in today's MMQB

http://mmqb.si.com/mmqb/2015/12/21/nfl-week-15-tyrann-mathieu-injury-odell-beckham-panthers-giants

Cam Newton, quarterback, Carolina. I am simply going to retire this honor. I’m just going to call it the “Cam Newton Memorial Offensive Player of the Week.” What is this? Every week he’s doing something new and impossible. In the 38-35 win over the Giants, he threw for 340 yards with five touchdowns and no picks (his third five-touchdown game in the past month)—and added 100 rushing yards on eight carries. This is a quarterback who’s been playing much more from the pocket than ever, but on Sunday in the Meadowlands, in as emotional a game the 14-0 Panthers have played this season, he needed his track shoes. Three times in the last 10 minutes he ran for a first down. Right now, Newton’s the best weapon in football, and it’s not close for second.

Also at MMQB, an excellent table with a roundup up Josh Norman's stats in terms of opposing teams' production so far this season:

The amazing season of Carolina cornerback Josh Norman continued Sunday in New Jersey. Week by week, look at the ridiculous numbers he’s put up, with statistics by Pro Football Focus on the totals of the receivers week by week who Norman has been in coverage against: (Note: Panthers had a bye in Week 6)

Here's the "what we learned" game analysis from Panthers.com

Some stats about the running game and how both Cams performed yesterday:

Quote

1. A TALE OF TWO CAMS: Even with running back Jonathan Stewarticon-article-link.gif out with a knee injury, the Panthers rushed for 100-plus yards for the 25th consecutive game, gaining 171 thanks in large part to quarterback Cam Newtonicon-article-link.gif and rookie running back Cameron Artis-Payneicon-article-link.gif .

Newton rushed for 100 yards, highlighted by a 47-yard scamper in the first quarter, to reach the century mark for the third time in his career. He also passed for 340 yards and five touchdowns to become the first quarterback in NFL history to pass for 300, rush for 100 and throw five touchdown passes in a game.

In addition, Newton is now the first player in NFL history to throw for 3,000 yards and rush for 500 in each of his first five seasons.

Artis-Payne, a rookie who had 12 rushes for 31 yards entering the game, eclipsed both of those season totals with 14 rushes for 59 yards. He also added the first two receptions of his career for 34 yards.

Fullback Mike Tolberticon-article-link.gif got most of the early work. Tolbert gained 10 yards on five attempts, while Fozzy Whittakericon-article-link.gif had 2 yards on two rushes and also caught two passes for 14 yards.

The Panthers seemed to miss Stewart early, but getting Whittaker and Artis-Payne involved in the short passing game helped open things up.

I'm going to post a bunch of stats-related tweets I favorited during the game... posting them in chronological order as they occurred, with some of them being while the game was still in progress, meaning stats were not final at the time.

After Cam's 47 yard run in the 1st Q, J Jones sent out this:

That's the longest rush of the season for the Panthers

I'm not sure whether it was that run that pushed Cam over 500 rushing yards for the season (I think it may have been), but in any case, early in the game, Cam broke 500 yards, and Panthers PR noted:

#Panthers QB Cam Newton is over the 500 yard rushing mark for the season, his 5th consecutive w/ 500+

Following Ginn's 1st TD, BBR noted he'd matched KB's TD numbers from 2014

Kelvin Benjamin TD catches in 2014 - 9 Ted Ginn TD catches in 2014 - 9

And of course, later in the game, Ginn had a SECOND TD for 10 on the season so far, beating Kelvin's 2014 total.   I think I saw that this is the MOST TDs by a Panthers receiver since Steve Smith in 2005.

Who would have ever guessed that early in the season?!

Peanut Tillman was of course a big contributor with the two turnovers - his forrced fumble & his interception.  Following the FF, and Carolina's subsequent score, BBR updated the points off turnovers stats.  I agree, this doesn't get enough attention.  WOW.

And the most underrated stat of the NFL season now looks like this: Pts off turnovers CAR - 124 Opponents - 22

Panthers PR chimed in too:

#Panthers capitalize on NYG turnover and score a TD. Carolina has scored 124 points off of takeaways this season

It was awesome to see NJ native Greg Olsen have a fantastic game at the Meadowlands.  Glad he had a big crowd of friends and family at the game to see him break more personal records.  That TD of his was BEAUTIFUL.

#Panthers TE Greg Olsen now over 1000 yards for the season. HIs 2nd consecutive with 1000+

Olsen had gone 5 straight without a TD. Now has 7 for the year, his most since 8 with the Bears in '09.

Greg Olsen now has a career-high 1,012 yards on the year.

As I think probably all are aware, yesterday we broke the record for most points ever scored by the Panthers in the regular season.  I think it was Greg's TD that put us over the top... but anyway, mid game yesterday, these tweets appeared: (I'll update final totals as needed later in this thread)

#Panthers have scored 425 points this season, a new single-season franchise record, surpassing the 421 scored in 1999

Points scored in a season:

1) 425 - 2015

2) 421 - 1999

21) 196 - 2010

Pretty amazing stat, especially since it's still Week 15.

BBR noted the odd trend that Devin Funchess seems to have his best games (in terms of TD catches) in odd weeks!

Devin Funchess TDs:

Week 9

Week 11

Week 13

Week 15

So.... I'm calling it now.  Another TD against Tampa (week 17) Then, he'll catch our game-winning TD in the Divisional playoffs in week 19... and how about we say he catches 2 TDs in the Superbowl (Week 21)?  That would be something for a rookie!
