538: Panthers may be screwed

The Carolina offense was unusually successful last year: The Panthers led the NFL in scoring and offensive touchdowns, but the team ranked just 11th overall in yards and just ninth in net yards per pass. Carolina also averaged a league-high 5.54 points per trip to the red zone last season, and history shows that that level of success isn’t sustainable; as a result, some regression to the mean on the scoreboard was to be expected.

But the defense, which returned All-Pro linebackers Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kawann Short, was supposed to again be among the league’s stingiest units. So far, it has allowed Trevor Siemian to lead a fourth-quarter comeback in his first NFL start, failed to record a takeaway against a Vikings team missing Adrian Peterson and in Sam Bradford’s second start with the team, and on Sunday allowed an opposing QB to reach 500 passing yards and an opposing pass catcher to reach 300 receiving yards in the same game, a first in the Super Bowl era.

Josh Norman isn’t walking through that door, and both Newton and Davis (hamstring) are banged up. The Panthers were probably worse than their record for most of last year and are likely better than their record this year. But with both the offense and defense taking steps back, it’s time to panic in Carolina.

    • I agree with OP notion, QBs always get credited for game winning drives even if they do minimal. Just last night Caleb got credited for a GE drive when they basically ran the ball the whole drive and only had to go 36 yards.   And there are drives where Bryce could of had a game winning drive if not for a Legette drop vs Philly or a Chubba fumble vs Tampa
    • You are actually, genuinely comparing Bryce to Jimmy fuging Pickles? Jimmy accounted for 3 touchdowns in his 10 starts in 2010. In Bryce’s 10 games post benching last year, he accounted for 20 touchdowns. Jimmy threw three touchdowns in 2010. Three. Bryce has thrown 10 touchdowns through 6 games. He is currently on track to throw for 3300 yards, 28 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Wtf are we even talking about anymore. I mean seriously
    • Tepper? The guy that directs the coaches towards goals that he set for them… that guy. He is the one.    I don’t think he ever was going to be expelled from class, they had him come in for garbage time maybe the 2nd week he was benched.  I will say this. People said he wasn’t under pressure the last part of the year when he did better, but he was fighting for his career and that’s pressure. And he saved his career too. I don’t reject him for those kinds of things I reject him for the physical things. I have always brought it down to he has slim margin for error and has to be perfect. People with the tool set have a little fatter margin for error. Why make it harder on yourself? Got nothing to do with hating him.  I am no statistician but game that margin thing out a lot and see how that works.
