Mort Mentions Pep as Deadline Looms

Both of those players were traded before the season, after signing their FT contracts. And they had value based on performance vs contract dollar amount, unlike Pep at 17 million.

Only an idiot would assume Pep at 17 mill this year.

but they can trade you to who they want once you sign the tender up till the deadline, they just got moved early to help the teams that wanted them to get them adjusted to their teams, playbook and schemes

Those players you mentioned signed there contracts early before the draft and were traded for draft picks.

Peppers fuged you, me and the Panthers by signing at the last second.

By then Hurney had already used terrible judgement to give away another future #1 this time for a second round pick.

Seriously Fiz, joking aside.

Do you train Merriman? Do you practice with him? I haven't seen any signs of deterioration in his athleticism. I don't think his skills have diminished despite his knee injury last year. I think he's sandbagging just like Pep was until this last week b/c he's pouting about his situation.

Actually, Fiz, I agree here. This year alone Merriman has been involved in three-way, so we know he has endurance and lateral movement. And he still has the quicks to chase down a hopped up 90-pound asian pseudo-celebrity. If that's not an endorsement for his physical prowess, nothing it.

Pep had the right to negotiate a deal with another team but couldn't find a club that would for that amount of money or the picks it requires. He had the right to work a deal with another team for the franchise tender we offered him as long as he didn't sign ours.We could not even mention his name in a trade to any GM or team official,on another team, without being fined for it

And if he signed early we could trade him wherever we find a sucker.

Pep's agent targeting where Pep wanted to play? ie New England, they ain't that dumb.

We have to let him walk, suck it up and look forward to a #1 in 2011.

Thanks Marty, hope you're in the unemployment line when we have a number 1 again.

He signed cause he found out there was no market for him at that salary

As someone stated before..Merriman playing 4-3 LB is one of the more stupid things I have heard in awhile, he would be a 4-3 DE plain and simple. Sure he drops into coverage once in awhile but that doesn't make him a 4-3LB not to mention his greatest asset is rushing the passer which his chances at doing so would greatly decline in almost any 4-3 scheme. Have you ever even seen the guy drop into coverage? Trust me hes no Champ Bailey.....

    • Sound write-up MHS, as always.  Agree that the smart move that forward thinking franchises make would be drafting a tackle early, if not for sure in R1, depending on who's there. Based on early predictions we're choosing between Fano and Proctor. No brainer here...Fano all day. Proctor does not move the needle for me. In my mind, Icky has less future here than Brooks does. I love Icky, but he has been average as a top-10 pick, one good year where you saw the potential...and that was this year. He's built like a RT and his strengths are there, but he's always played left. I also feel like part of what has held him back from being elite, was his work ethic. He was known for it coming out, but feel like he fell right at home in Carolina and maybe didn't push himself as hard as he needed to. Throw in a major crucial injury that will take time to recover and a historical low return rate to current form, and the outlook is not great. Fano can play both sides and we need to also plan for Moton's departure. Either way, delaying drafting a tackle early this year will hurt us down the line. Our current OL is overpriced and needs to start adding draftees to start balancing out the inevitable changes coming in the next 2-3 years.  As others have said, maybe Icky can replace Hunt or Lewis in a couple years when he's fully recovered....IDK. Also not a guarantee, but then you have to figure out his contract and it becomes even more clouded.
    • It's past time to just eliminate it in terms of an event. Just do the voting, name the roster, and move on. When you get down to 6th and 7th alternates it's just absurd. It doesn't mean anything.
