We've run rpos with Newton for seven years. I believe it was Rivera on Wfnz this week saying they've been doing them since the beginning but the public just found the term recently with the Eagles. Though an RPO doesn't mean it looks like one and turns out to be the other. It isn't a fake, it's a choice .

Though I certainly agree on other points.

But the difference is, RPOs are from the pocket/behind the LOS.  The bootlegs cause a defense to stretch, lose their assignments, lose contain, etc.  So, I agree, it is obvious we have used Cam as both a running and passing threat in plays with the option...  the problem is Shula was just unimaginative in how it was done.  Much like with everything else Shula did, if he found moderate success early with something (and the option plays were in there with Chud), he would just keep doing it in similar situations...  hence why we only really saw bootlegs on 3rd or 4th and short, rather than as a play on a 1st or 2nd and 10 to loosen up a defense and test their discipline.

While the option in itself appears creative, look at how many times defense just started sending the house and stopping it in the backfield...  it was because Shula lacked the creativity or forethought to be a step ahead...  he stuck to what he knew, for better or for worse.
