Ryan Williams RB VT

completely different rusher than evens (last years freshman). he tied the freshman td record already (was set last year as well, williams is 1 behind in rushing, but had 1 rec td unlike evans). evens just ran over people, williams can push the pile, or break your ankles in the open field. doesnt have elite top end speed for a rb though. williams was 13th in the country in rushing coming into the game (113ish ypg average before the 179 last night). he may get the freshman single game record if they let him loose for 60 an entire 60 mins.

he has, what, 6 100 yard games already (record was 4 at vt, set last year by evans, and his 1st was nov 6th). it took evans 287 carries to get to 11 tds and 1265 yards last years. williams has 189 carries for 1109 and 10tds. thats good for #3 in rushing yards atm on a similar # carries to those that havent played this week (other than ingram and ryan mathews)

oh in this the 2/3 point of the season, and he is breaking records with 4-5 games left (against alteast 2 cream puffs in uva and maryland, and a unpredictable ncstate).

he is better than evens overall, even though imo he doesnt fit the VTs mold for a rb as much as evens did last year. i would love to draft williams in 2 years as a backup to stewie.

    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
    • Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
