Under the Dome, Stephen King's Newest

His last few have been a little lame...

That's why I'm pushing this one. I just finished it and started reading at 10:30. And I have a damn 8:00 tomorrow but I can't get to sleep cause of the damn thing. And not cause it's scary either. this one simply packs a wallop.

(although I didn't think either Duma Key nor Lisey's Story was lame. D But I know there's a LOT of people who disagree.)

Finished it last night and .... can't really give it a glowing recommendation. btw, how the hell did you read 1070+ pages in 15 hours?

It was good, and the premise is very clever and interesting. But it's the same damn book! King has developed so many characters that they all merge together. That factor was irritating but if you haven't read King before I do recommend it. Especially before the inevitably shitty movie adaptation skips wide release and goes directly to video.

I did get a kick out of a quote near the end. "Never give a good politician time to pray"

:cheers2:

 I read the last 400...sorry that wasn't clear, but it WAS one in the morning.

I guess it may be The Stand you're referring to when you say it's the same book...and I could definitely understand that. Perhaps I was wearing rose-colored glasses because this was closer to vintage 70's 80's King than late 90's-2000's King.

Ahh, makes sense now! It took me almost a week to read it and i stayed up way too late on many of those nights.

You are correct about The Stand. It is one of my all time favorites so I really didn't have much of a problem with the similarities. Interesting in the author's notes at the end that King actually started writing this book in 1976 and put it on the shelf so it could be argued that The Stand is similar to Under the Dome!

Did you read "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon"?

Did you read "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon"?

Yep. I've read pretty much everything the man's written. TGWLTG is in the middle of my fave's list: it's not one I'd read over and over again, but I can't help but appreciate King's willingness to try new things, and I thought, considering what he was doing, he did a great job. I mean, it's one thing to have a girl lost in the woods with people looking for her. It's another to have a girl lost in the woods and the only viewpoint we have is that of the girl: she's literally the only character--it was a big risk and it's a testimony to King's mastery of the language that he could write a complete novel about that while keeping our interest.

    • I really like the way this team is trending. Morgan and Canales rookie campaign saw them do some questionable picks but, they also did some really good things. Especially addressing the offensive line.  Young had such a disastrous rookie season where his confidence was nowhere to be seen.  You can attribute part of this to a terrible offensive line.  So, we focused on the O-line.   We then brought in several defensive free agents that were supposed to compliment Brown.  Once Brown went down those players could not hold the line.  2025 we focused on defense in Free Agency and brought in several good players.  We then added more talent in the draft.  I think we have competition in several areas where Vets are not guaranteed to be starters.  Our offensive line is pretty set with some good backups.  Our defensive line is going to be a war for who comes out to be the starters.  All in All, we are leaps and bounds much better than 2023 roster.  Canales made some rookie head coach mistakes but grew as the season progressed.  He got our QB, who was starting to look like a huge bust, playing with confidence and poise.  Now it appears Young is moving upwards.  Maybe he is a QB whisperer.  After Young started to play better our offense was fun to watch.  Morgan knows football and knows what he wants in his players.  It appears to me that not only are these players he's drafted really good and got great value for them, but they are also high motor, intense players. Our defense, in the past, was always the key to our success.  I think Morgan is building a great defense. I know it is too soon to tell but I believe we may have a tandem that will be around a long time.  It would be nice to see Morgan/Canales be in the same class as Lynch/Shanahan and Beane/McDermott.   I know many Huddlers will overreact, but I truly believe we have a tandem that will be around a long time. TIME WILL TELL. Go Panthers
    • I am actually really excited about this kid. One thing that really jumped off watching his highlights was he almost is too fast or almost over pursues. You can get away with that stuff in college but the NFL these guys are stronger and more "slippery".  Little things that can be corrected but he seems to have a motor which is always a plus!
    • Many teams looked at the drop-off as a reason not to select him in the first round.  Going into the 2024 season he was listed as a potential first round pick.  Morgan, IMO, based our pick on what he did in 2023 and expects him to play at the weight he played at Purdue. Morgan did this twice in this draft.  Scourton and Evans.  saw one stat on Evans that he had 58 ypg in one of his previous seasons.  Plus Notre Dame has a history of good TEs that can catch and block. Canales will 3 good TEs that all will see time on the field.
