Arthur Jones, DT, Syracuse

...would be a solid prospect. 6-4, 293.

May fall due to injuries, but if we're going with a rotation of guys, won't be pressed to start and would provide quality depth as a penetrating type, under tackle. Possible starter and replacement for Damione Lewis down the road. May be available in the 4th round. Just a thought. Blah, blah, blah.

And yes i know we have other needs but theres always free agency and we do have other draft picks.

Mike Neal, Purdue, is another DT worth noting in the 3rd-4th round.

There was talk of jones going in the 1st before he got hurt.Because he could prob play in 34 or 43 he will be taken early.I think he would be there in the 2nd but I want a WR then.

I would like to look at Geno aktins in the 4th.

Beat me to it. If you want a 3 tech (which I assume at that size he is best suited there in our scheme) go with Atkins. The kid impressed me all senior bowl week and dominated the game. My instincts are usually right and I have a feeling he could be the next Tony Brown.

Neither he fits the Tampa/Cover 2 scheme. Its not a requirement but most teams that run one or the other have a smaller penetrating DT or undertackle as it is sometimes called. And the other DT is like the NT in a 3-4 where his main job is to absorb blockers and clog up running holes.

We were in need of a NT type after the loss of Kemo so thats why we went after two of the bigger body DT's. Even though I like Tyler more at UT.

Besides when it comes to interior line (both sides) height is vastly overrated. The whole idea is to get the best leverage and time has shown that a slightly shorter player usually wins the leverage battle. I can understand wanting a 6'3 or above DE but its far more important to me what DT weigh and Atkins at 6'1 290 he is about right for the UT position IMO.

    • Cam was hitting his stride as a QB in 2017/2018.     This is why I think stats like completion percentage are overrated. As long as a QB is clutch and makes the throws to win the game the rest doesn’t really matter. What good is a check down stat padder if they’re a choker.  Until Norv Turner (and briefly Chud) got here we put Cam in high pressure throwing situations all the time. We also ran the ball on first down more than most teams in the NFL in the Ron era. Coupled with shitty WRs, all that is expressed in his stats. I also assume Cam took the ball in his hands on many occasions rather than trust Funchess to catch the ball.    It was also never Cams job to play the game like someone else. His presence on the field dictated the game in a way that is rarely seen.  He showed he could play the dink and dunk game just before TJ Watt. That didn’t suddenly make him better than his earlier seasons. He just got put in a legit under center  passing game again for first time since his rookie year with Chud.    Ron took the quickest path to success and abused the RPO because his ass was about to get fired.    Cam never got the credit for being the cerebral player that he was. I just think when you are legitimately a human Superman, sometimes the best play is having the ball in your hands. He was a better passer than Delhomme was.
    • I don't think Canales has any problem benching Bryce or moving on if Bryce doesn't come out playing like the end of last year.  It's year 3 no more excuses for Bryce
    • Yea Bryce was definitely a top half qb the second half of last season but I'm not sure Canales is 100% sold on him.  Like I've said in another post I think that's part of why we talked to so many South Carolina players in the draft process.  I think they are doing early due diligence on Sellers just in case.
