Vick has connections in St. Louis

"Rams Hot for Vick"

Posted by Mike Florio on February 17, 2010 8:35 PM ET

It has been assumed for weeks if not months that the St. Louis Rams will be one of the top suitors for Eagles quarterback Mike Vick.

The connection is obvious -- G.M. Billy Devaney served as assistant G.M. in Atlanta when Vick played quarterback there. (And, amazingly, Devaney hasn't ruled out further association with Vick based on that experience.)

Then there's the reality that the Rams have no clear-cut option at quarterback. Drafting Vick would allow them to take one of the top-tier defensive tackles with the first overall pick and pass on the risks inherent to taking a quarterback.

One potential unknown in this regard is ownership. Though Shahid Khan has no control over the team yet, it would be prudent for Devaney to ensure that Khan would be OK with the notion of Vick coming to St. Louis. If Khan has concerns, Vick might not be a good fit.

But there's no real downside, in our view. The Eagles already have absorbed the not-as-bad-as-expected P.R. hit for giving a reformed dogfighter a second chance. And it's hard to imagine many folks in St. Louis getting worked up about Vick's arrival, especially since one of the local delicacies consists of a two slices of bread stuffed with the fried contents of a calf's cranium.

    • Gustavsson would be insane. I think we would have to break the bank to afford that move. Which, I don't think is necessarily a bad idea. Ultimately, Freddie isn't likely to be around more than a couple of seasons more. We can all agree that unless they have a fleet of sports psychologists working on Kochetkov, he will never be capable of getting his head on straight enough to compete.
    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
