Perhaps one of the more underrated singer/songwriters of the last 50 years, he passed last week at 78.

One of the architects of the California folk-country-rock sound, he co-wrote huge hits for the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt. Best of My Love, Victim of Love, How Long, Heartache Tonight and New Kid in Town are but a few. He and fellow Detroit native Glenn Frey were roommates in SoCal in the late 60s and recorded an album together under the name Longbranch Pennywhistle (which I own a mint copy). He later put together the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band (SHF Band, for some), with Chris Hillman from the Byrds and Richie Furay from Buffalo Springfield.

He was instrumental in getting Don Henley and later, Glenn Frey in the studio as backing musicians for Linda Ronstadt and then brought in Bernie Leadon from the Flying Burrito Brothers and Randy Meisner, the bass player from Poco. With Linda Ronstadt's full support, the foursome of Henley, Frey, Leadon and Meisner launched the Eagles. I'm very fortunate to have been able to see all of these people perform either solo or with their bands, the Eagles, Ronstadt, Poco, the list goes on.

He worked extensively with Linda Ronstadt, contributing songs and worked on the production side with some of her albums. They dated through the early to mid-70s. He also worked with Don Henley, James Taylor, and was dating Stevie Nicks after he and Ronstadt broke up. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.

I'll be listening to both of my SHF Band albums as well as Longbranch Pennywhistle.

    • For all but 2 plays he was treated like a 3rd string QB that game…we t and Canales has been consistently doing one thing all season…..call deep shots on 3rd/4th and short….because it’s about the only way Bryce can get a big play he feels comfortable attempting.  Man coverage with a team playing the short yardage.  And it’s still worked out bad all year.   Law averages comes into play on that playcall and now it’s a “great game”
    • I'll say Bryce Young is giving me whiplash!  Plays well, plays like poo, plays well...  Its the cycle of Bryce Young! I'm really happy with the win Sunday.  Some of y'all are just miserable people.  Do I think Bryce is HIM though?  Nope.  He's really freaking inconsistent.  That a player AND coaching issue.  I didn't get a chance to watch the game, how was Bryce's vibe early on?  What he chill and calm or a little fired up? I'm think that we are going to roll into 2026 with Young and Canales.  I hope we do pick a traitsy QB to develop & push or we sign a hungry vet who wants to beat Bryce out.  I fully expect the Bryce cycle to continue next year as well. Now could Bryce be "just" good enough to help us build a team, and then we go after a better prospect QB after we trade Bryce off (or let him walk, who knows what the future is?)?  Is Bryce our ultimate BRIDGE QB?  I don't know, sounds silly to type myself.  Happy Monday! I'm just going to enjoy the after glow from a win I ended up watching on drive charts lol.
