‘Back to Football’ Party July 31 celebrates Panthers’ return

There are two hotels/motels within walking distance. The closest is a place you really don't want to stay.

The other is the Marriott at Renaissance Park. It can be a bit pricey, but again, it is within walking distance. It also is close to the central business district, where there is Wild Wings, Delaney's Irish Pub, Terry's Tap Room at RJ Rockers, Groucho's, Lime Leaf (Thai food) and a few other restaurants.

Other hotels are within easy driving distance and are fairly inexpensive -- Courtyard Marriott, Fairfield Inn, etc.

I do strongly suggest you not stay at the Days Inn on Church Street near campus. Other fans have and do stay there, but I would not recommend it.

I have a little tip for you guys who will need to ward off mosquitoes down in Sparkle City. Put listerine - - - yes, listerine- - - in a little spray bottle or you can just rub it on like lotion. You will not be bothered by mosquitoes. I've tried it and I know it works!!!!

Don't forget, if you have children ages 6-13, to register them for the Panther Pals program. We do it at the first practice of each day (except Aug. 11 and Aug. 18).

For the first Panther Pals of the season, we had QBs Matt Moore, Jimmy Clausen and Tony Pike, along with Jonathan Stewart. (I'm old, it was hot and hectic, and I can't remember who our other player was ....)

The kids had a blast ... the little girl who got Matt Moore was thrilled, and he was fabulous with her. Tony spent a lot of time with his Pal, and they were all great guys. I love my job!

Festivities at Gibbs Stadium include live band, TopCats, local food

It’s time to get “Back to Football” with the Carolina Panthers as Wofford College, the City of Spartanburg and Team Spartanburg Sports Council host a celebration of the team’s return on Saturday, July 31, at Gibbs Stadium. Festivities will be held on the stadium plaza and surrounding areas from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., then resume following the team’s 6:30 p.m. practice in the stadium.

The NFL team returns to Wofford for its 16th summer training camp, with the opening practice set for 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 29. The Panthers will be in Spartanburg until Wednesday, Aug. 18.

The “Back to Football” Party will feature live performances by popular regional band Back 9 and appearances by the TopCat cheerleaders and Panthers mascot Sir Purr. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at a “Taste of Spartanburg” food court featuring foods from local restaurants. There will be giveaways and other activities as well.

In addition, the Panthers Junior Training Camp for youngsters will be held from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the Wofford intramural field, between Cumming and Twitty streets below the main Gibbs Stadium parking lot.

Wofford also will host a Tailgate Party from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, on the Gibbs Stadium Plaza. The “best barbecue ribs in the Upstate” will be available for purchase while fans will be treated to a performance by the Bushy Valley Boys bluegrass band. Food and beverages will continue to be available during the Panthers’ 6:30 p.m. practice in the stadium.

Admission to all events is free.

For information, contact Laura Corbin, director of news services at Wofford College, at [email protected] or 864-597-4180.

EDITED: Or, you could just post questions here or message me ....

This sounds like a great deal.I will try to go if i don't have to work.

Does anyone know if the "Junior Training Camp" listed in the 4th paragraph of the original post is happening on Saturday? That sounds a lot like the "Kids Combine" which is happening as part of Sunday's Family Fun Day. Are these two different events?

We're going on Saturday, but I'm just trying to figure out what time we need to get there (3:30 for the Combine or just 6:30 for the practice).

Any help is appreciated.

    • Gonna have to strongly disagree with you here. Here are the last 20 Super Bowls - only two of them IMO had QB that didn't play like Superman to get them there/win the game/both, and that was Peyton in 2015 and Ben in 2005. Even then they both had that ability, Peyton was just old and Ben young. That said, there were flashes in the pan like Foles in 2017 and (to a lesser degree) Flacco in 2012. But even counting that, it's 4/20. 20% odds aren't good enough and Bryce was absolutely drafted at #1 to be a guy that elevates an entire team and plays like Superman. If he can't do that then it's a failed pick, full stop. Being a poor man's Teddy doesn't cut it for a #1 overall and that's true for any team, not just Carolina.
    • the problem is if we're waiting for Cam v2, we're going to be waiting decades longer.  our best hope is that bryce is better than we all think he is and that canales is able to work some serious magic with him and the scheme to help him live up anywhere close to the potential we thought he had. he's a smart kid. we just have to be able to have a situation that allows him to use his smarts.  the truth with cam was that een he had to have a system tailored for his skillset coming into the league. the difference between him and luck (which was the debate in '09 when we thought luck was an option) was that with luck, he could be placed in any offense and it would work...hence the higher floor he had  than cam. cam, though, needed an offense that was built around him to reach his potential. he could have done alright in a more pro-style offense, but to reach his ceiling (which was seen by a lot of people as being higher than luck). i don't think having to have an offense tailored around what you can and can't do well is a problem for people who can develop around them...after they've truly identified what those can and can't items are. we didn't have that last year. i think we have that this year. we want a guy who can carry a team on his back, but those kind of guys are very rare. we don't need to spend our time trying  find that guy, because even when you have them there's no guarantee that they will be enough.  championships are won, quite often, by teams who learn to compensate for less than the greatest QB play. you have a great defense and can protect the ball while wearing out the other defense and you've got a chance.  we don't need Bryce to be superman (despite where we drafted him and what we paid to get him). we just need him to be able to run (manage) a good offense.
    • The Panthers aren't building a Bryce Young roster. Alabama didn't recruit personnel to fit a Bryce Young scheme. Canales' approach is to build an NFL roster (which they didn't have last season) and then cater his scheme and playcalling to what the players do best. The team is not pigeon holing itself into an offense that doesn't fit any other QB. Their goal this off-season was to provide NFL average or better talent to the offense - period. Very little to do with matching personnel for  Bryce Young's skillset or lack thereof.
