For Jimmy Clausen to do good his rookie season...

He can be helped with schemes that get the ball out of his hands quickly. Reverses to Smitty and others come to mind, as do screen passes. Running the Wildcat can help, if done right. I'd like to see the old Baltimore Colt flea-flicker, where the ball is handed off for what appears to be an outside sweep, then the ball is thrown back to the QB. I'm going to challenge all here: count the number of times we run between the tackles on second down if we throw an incomplete pass on first down, regardless of who the QB is, or has been! I'm telling you, it is a hallmark of us. If I could bet on that on a play-by-play basis in Vegas, I'd come out WAY ahead. The only times we don't do that is late in the game and we're trailing. That has been going on for years now. We're not the only team that does that, but I'll wager we do so more than any other team. The point is that we're so predictable. That must change...

Absent a true veteran like Jake on the sidelines who could help Clausen (and Moore missed this as well this year), becoming much less predictable will only help Clausen, and the rest of the team. That applies to the other aspects of the team as well, we're 0-2 with no real expectations anymore, let's try some new wrinkles. How about some reverses on kickoffs? How about an onside kick the first time we do kick off, or at some point other than near the end of the game and we HAVE to try one? How about more attempts to block punts? Let's at least make it FUN for all involved, and some element of razzle-dazzle will contribute to that. I don't really care if it works, I just want to see some efforts directed that way, for a real change!
