The Cowher Watch

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

So with Cowher now talking about being ready to coach again, the question is where does he wind up.

Based on what we know, it's a pretty safe bet it won't be Charlotte. Jason Garrett's record - and a recent report from Florio - assert that it won't be Dallas either (not that I expected he'd be able to coexist with Jerry Jones anyway).

Other teams that are likely to be looking for a new head coach...

- Buffalo

- Cincinnati

- Denver

- San Francisco

Teams that may potentially be in the market...

- Cleveland

- Detroit

- Houston

- Tennessee

- San Diego

Cowher started his coaching career in Cleveland. I would have put them as the chief possibility if not for Mike Holmgren being there. Tennessee would be ironic since there's a story told that Cowher ended Jeff Fisher's playing career with a special teams tackle that messed his ankle up.

So where does "The Chin" end up coaching?

Well, if being close to family really is that important to him, I would take out the west coast teams.

And I agree with the Cleveland statement; no since Holmgrem is there.

And dont think he wants to go to the perennial losers; Detroit, buffalo.

So that leaves;

Cinci (FO is still dysfunctional)

Denver * (far from home/family but good FO)

Houston

Tenn * (close to home/family)

Maybe he doesn't want as much control as people think, and also it's his former team. Then to be able to take it to Pittsburgh twice a year? That's pretty tempting.

Ah, but he can likely get total control and be back in the AFC North (and Ohio) by going to Cincinnati. Plus there's a high draft pick and the challenge of turning around the Bengals.

Gantt, Reed and Yasinskas have all said we won't go for Cowher.

Naturally, you can disagree. But if Cowher doesn't come here, then where does he go?

Naturally you can take Gantt, Reed and Yasinkas' speculations as gospel.

Until Jerry Richardson says otherwise it's either foolish or arrogant to assume otherwise.

Cowher in Cincinnati, this is great stuff.

Here's a man who won't even discuss with a team their head coach position until the end of the season and their head Coach is fired and you think it's likely he might go against the Steeler organization and sell out to Cincy. Nice.

What I take is that they know more about the inner workings of the team than any of us does because they actually have access to the inner workings and the people in charge.

Pretty much everything we know about the inner workings of the team comes from them - or others like them - so going against them can be a reach. No, they aren't always right, but they pretty much always know more than we do, and they know it sooner.

Cowher's already made an intradivisional switch going from Cleveland to Pittsburgh, so this wouldn't be that shocking. Heck, even Dick LeBeau went to the Bengals for a few years there.

    • if  ANYONE actually goes & looks at the FACTS on rookie Qb's after 2 full seasons as a starter in the NFL & they are still well below average do they rarely ever actually become top tier Qb's & instead most likely either do not recieve a second contract & or become life long backups...just saying
    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
