The Older Coach Delima

First forgive me if this has been discussed already but I come here pretty frequently and haven't seen it posted so I thought I'd bring it up as a discussion.

It seems like the two main candidates that is on every ones wish list for coach next year are Harbaugh and Cowher. Now watching the constant cluster f**K thats been going on in Washington has caused me to rethink a Cowher hire.

We all talk about the game passing Fox by and Fox not being able to handle the changes to the NFL. The game has changed and the players and attitudes in it have changed as well. Shanahan was a well respected Super Bowl winning coach but it seems to me that he is ill equipped to handle a team now because of his absence from the game. He's really screwed the pooch there a lot. A similar situation happened right here in Carolina with George Seifert,a well respected, SB winning coach, left the game and came back and couldn't handle the "new" NFL and the players that dominated it.

Thinking about Cowher he's been gone from the league longer that Shannahan was do you think he might run into the same problems that Shanahan and Seifert ran into? It takes a truly dynamic coach to last in the NFL for a long time as a HC and it's even harder IMO to do so after being gone from the game.

Good points. I'd be fine with Cowher, but I think he'd be a lot like Fox. The biggest difference being a 3-4 instead of a 4-3. Plus I'd be scared he'd want GM power. There's that story that on draft day he wanted Shawne Andrews instead of Roethlisberger. Still a good player, but it would have cost them two superbowls.

Shanahan was only out for the 2009 season, so I don't think you can blame his failures in WAS on that. That may be more of an extension of the way things finished in Denver.

And re: Cowher/GM, everything I've heard about that says that if he comes back as HC that he wants either Kevin Colbert or Omar Khan to come with him in the FO.
