Serious question for Hawk...

...and anyone else living in the great white north. Saw on the news today the highs in the northern plains today aren't going to get above 0. I've never lived any farther north than I do now, and it rarely even gets in the teens here, much less below zero... how the hell do you keep your house warm?

I was in illinois last february for a couple weeks, and a big snow storm hit the night I got in. The snow didn't melt in the two weeks i was there. the first few days I was wearing several layers including scarf, gloves and a toboggan. By the time I left I was dressing like I was back in SE NC.

Pay 1000+ dollars a month for gas, or if they were cheap they would have a wood burning heat system and just have to bear the cold 2 times a day to keep it full. I don't think they even do electric heat.

Did any one else have a gas bill spike in January? fuging cold weather.
