n4s720's Mock Draft, 2.0

Here's the second edition of my mock draft after seeing some of the prospects at the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine.

Round 1:

Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama

Hide your QBs, Hide your RBs, because Mr. Dareus is snatchin' them all up. In my opinion, DT is our most dire need. After seeing Dareus beast up the combine AFTER putting on weight, I was sold. Dareus can rush the passer, stuff the run and instantly make our current DEs look better. He lead the Crimson Tide in sacks last year and has a non-stop motor. On top of all of this, Dareus is a nice guy, which Richardson loves.

Round 3, Pick 1

Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia

With Marshall more than likely not returning, we need another corner across from Gamble. While I love Munnerlyn, I don't see him matching up well outside all the time. We need another corner with some size to take away some of the mismatches. Rowling was looking great at the combine and was a solid four year starter at Virginia. It'd be a blessing if he fell to us at the top of the third round.

Round 3, Pick 2

Marcus Cannon, OG, Texas Christian University

This guy is a mountain. 6'6", 358 lbs at the combine. For all his size, he can also move. Our offensive line was a disaster last year between injuries and a lack of depth. Duke Robinson hasn't really shown that he has the work ethic to make it in the NFL. With Cannon and Otah on the right side, double trouble will be back to their old ways.

Round 4:

Nate Irving, LB, North Carolina State University

With all the injuries at LB last year, our depth was really exposed. Jamar Williams will not be retained along with one or two others. Irving is a very instinctual player who was an absolute beast while at NC State. He needs to work on his coverage skills, but I can definitely see him contributing right away on special teams and as a role player. Plus, he's a local boy.

Round 5:

Terrell McClain, DT, South Florida

Not a flashy prospect, but adds much needed depth at a position of great need. This pick may change to TE or WR if we bring in more veteran talent at DT during the off season. McClain didn't put up any flashy numbers at the combine, but he was constantly singled out for having great technique in the drills. He'd be a nice rotation or role player on our D-line.

Round 6:

Tori Gurley, WR, South Carolina

Gurley was only a two year player at Carolina, opting to come out because of his age (24). He was a very solid player for his two years at Carolina as both a receiver and a blocker. What was most impressive to me was that he had ZERO drops last year as the #2 receiver. I don't see him playing right away, but he'll make an immediate impact on special teams and could be a great slot receiver after some development.

    • Yep, the Panthers powers that be seem desperate to convince themselves he can clear the bare minimum bar of demanding a legit franchise QB contract. Canales seems to be laying the groundwork here of building the case that all of Bryce's shortcomings are still there and even more glaring than you may have thought while his strengths aren't nearly as strong as you had hoped and aren't near enough to make up for the lack of pure physical tools. When you have historically anomalous lack of measurables you need historically anomalous positive intangibles to make up for it. That was always issue with Bryce as a prospect. Like Parcells said when evaluating him, "he better walk on water".
    • I'm honestly not sure how much "west coast" plays into it. There's a huge difference between Tucson, AZ and Spokane, WA where he spent the previous two decades of his career. Chapel Hill is significantly different than Spokane but way more similar to it than Tucson. You're talking about a pretty significant plane ride to get back home either way. He and his family would be flying private and direct so we're talking about a 3ish hour flight vs. a 5ish hour flight. That's basically a wash. It's not like he went from Gonzaga to another PNW program. Tucson is a dramatic departure from Washington state. Honestly a far bigger departure climatically and scenery wise than Chapel Hill would be.
    • When asked if he thought he was close to returning to game action, "When you skate just with the goalie coach, it's tough to understand what your level is. Today, Svech scored on me a couple — probably a bad moment for me. I don't know. I'm probably very far from play if he scores on me." God, I love Kucci!
