Explains some of the new Salary Cap measures. As well as the NFL having a "soft" cap, some things about "cash over cap," and the "minimum myth."

Quick quotes:

We hear about a “hard Cap” in labor disputes, with NBA Owners desperately trying to “harden” their Cap, even pointing to the NFL as a model. However, while thought not as “soft” as the NBA version, the NFL is still a soft cap -- a “yarmulke”, if you will.

How soft? In the last capped year, 2009, while never being “over the Cap” of $123 million, teams like the Cowboys and Raiders had cash spending of over $150 million!

How does this happen? Signing bonuses are treated in different ways for cash and Cap: (1) for cash purposes, they are treated as fully paid, regardless of deferrals; and (2) for Cap purposes, they are prorated through the life of the contract.

As an example, Charles Johnson of the Panthers received a $30 million signing bonus on a six-year deal. It is treated as $30 million for cash purposes in 2011, yet due to Cap proration of signing bonuses, only $5 million for Cap purposes in each year between 2011 and 2016. Were Johnson to be released or traded prior to 2016, the $5 million of annual Cap charges would accelerate immediately into the then-existing Cap.

      Early returns are great and exciting but also worth noting that Gettleman had a few drafts that looked incredible early on and wound up mostly sucking (2014 mainly). Also PFF; grain of salt, etc.    I'm completely sold on Tet being a stud, knocked a high pick out of the park like we needed to and always should. Nearly sold on Scourton. Not sold on Princely but he had flashes. Not sold on Etienne as more than a 3rd stringer and special teamer, but that's not terrible for his draft position. Big fan of Ransom and think he'll be a starter.  Cam Jackson : IDK, I see limited upside but we didn't see much of him Evans was a nice find for draft position and he had a great rookie year for a late round rookie TE with plenty of veteran competition. Not sure about his upside though, seems like best case is a long term #2/3 TE, which isn't bad. Jimmy Horn, personally I didn't see a damn thing from him that impressed me all year. And he got a lot of opportunities. Pulling for the kid, but not convinced he's an NFLer.   UDFA: Fitzgerald was an amazing find

      Hoping someone tells us Bussi was in the starter's crease for the morning skate. Otherwise, place your 1st shot- 1st goal bets! Any closer to a deal that could land a 2C in Trocheck or Brayden Schenn? Or land a winger in Alex Tuch or reach for Jordan Kyrou?
