The problem with the Star Wars universe is that it was just simply massive. So many things that could have been explored but you are limited by the amount of content you can insert into a handful of feature length films. I think the average fan can be content with not knowing the full explanation behind every facet of the universe, and honestly they probably would have lost interest had they expounded on everything.

Yeah, but if you are going to have a major, life and relationship altering event between two characters that form two of the three main protagonists--it needs to be worked into the story better.
