Scout On Dontari Poe: Watch Him Play, He Didn’T Do Anything

In defense of a Poe 1st round pick. I will say franchises like the Ravens have made a habit in the draft of taking a chance on exceptionally large athletes. Ngata and Cody were smart picks. Upside on a cat like Dontari is off the charts. I get the counterpoint about production but i have faith in our coaching staff to bring out the best in him. Serious would not be mad at the pick. Do i like Worthy better? Yes. I also would take a gamble on Coples because of upside too so.....

and that still doesnt mean he will bust. some players may take a while to develop, and again i do not want him at 9.just saying its unfair to label a guy a bust before he played a NFL snap. plus the fact that he is a junior coming out, another year to prove himself would have helped.

The thing is that all of these arguements can be made for just about every athletic college football player that doesn't stand out...and there would be hundreds of them. The problem is that he he was in a position to show that he at least can be dominant, but never did. If he were in a good conference like the SEC, then I could ubderstand his lack of production (at least to a point), but he played against guys that will be lucky to make it in the Arena league, and didn't do much. And no, he wasn't doubled all the time, there were plenty of times he was stonewalled or ended up on his back one on one. Despite being big and athletic, he plays small, and he has never shown the heart or determination that you want to see out of a guy picked that high.

To me, this is a guy that may be worth the risk in the 3rd or 4th, but in no way is he worth an early pick...and God forbid in the top ten.

But those large athletes that they took were all very productive in college...against much better competition than Poe faced. Other than being big, strong, and athletic, what has Poe ever shown to indicate that he has any ability to be a decent NFL player?

I've listened to and read many evaluations (by so-called professional evaluators) and have yet to see one positive other than his size and athleticism. In almost every one of them, they make some comment along the lines of "he may not of been all that productive in college, but you just can't teach that kind of size and athleticism." Yet in none of them have I heard or read someone say they watched tape and came away impressd with anything. The only reason they give for rating him high is his freakish athlticism and size.

    • Option A:  Pay your starting QB starting QB money. Option B:  Look for a starting QB for 4-10 years (or longer) while wasting the talent at every other position.    How many of the top 20 QB's do you think are worth what they are being paid?   When you factor in the last year of his present deal his contract is really an average of 45 million per year which in today's QB market is a very, very good deal. I wish we'd had found a Brock Purdy to pay 50+ million a year right after we parted ways with Cam.  Ya'll go ahead and live in fairy tale land where good to great (much less elite) QB's are available to pay. Just the fact that they had the chance to pay Brock after the disaster of trading up for Lance is a testament that when you find a quarter back you can win with, complete in the playoffs and superbowls with, you pay him.
    • They will still be a playoff team but they aren't contenders anymore IMO. They won't be able to spend like they have when they went to a SB and proved he couldn't carry a win at that level with a really good team around him. Now he is going to have to do it with less to spend around him. They just locked in to being a playoff bound team that's going to be a known speed bump for whoever will represent the NFC in the SB.
    • Hmm. I think he'll live up to it. Last year, about half of his team was on IR it seems, at one time or another. Year before, Super Bowl appearance. Year before that, playoff run after being third on the depth chart and being pressed into service. Is he one of the greatest in the game right now? Nope. No chance of that. Is he in the top 10 going into next season? Pretty good chance of that.  Would 20 or more teams in this league love to have the guy as their starting QB. Most likely so. He's a good QB who can implement his coach's game plan to a T and has both the confidence of and confidence in his teammates. That'll take you a long way in this league if you've got the right cast around you, and he does.
