Please explain "fight" over Ballard

Sorry for what might be a stupid question by can someone explain the "non-written" rule about not claiming injured player (like Giants TE Ballard) of waivers?

All I find is the your are not suppose to do that but not why this is the case.

My first take on reading he was release was, with a lot of irony "What a classy move to cut a player that most likely extended his injury by 6 months by testing a full speed comeback route on the sideline, trying to do everything to stay in the game and helping the team that now dumps him.". But I guess there is more to it so I like to now what.

I guess it some unwritten rule as to not burn bridges but it seems kinda stupid
