First half musings

Recommended Posts

-Early drive falcons give panthers good field position and they capitalize

-falcons left a touchdown off the board in the red zone series where there were multiple penalties back and forth, Turner tripped up on own offensive lineman, roddy dropped a TD grab, nakamura comes up with a good pick on a forced throw to end the series.

-deangelo williams running fairly well. seems like runs are going either 10+ yards or for no gain.

-cam playing fairly well no mistakes

-turnover battle which was a point of emphasis in this game for both sides have resulted in point swings. like mentioned nakamura pick was a score off the board for the falcons, and the steve smith fumble led to a FG.

-Turner running strong early, disappeared towards the later part of the 2nd half

-falcons defense playing fairly well last 2 drives b4 the half.

-matt ryan and roddy white finding space, nakamura and norman? being picked on

close game so far which in a divisional game is expected. adjustments you should see in the 2nd half, I expect more Turner for the falcons offense, I expect more Cam from the panthers offense. If the panthers cant get a quick score we might see them starting to get away from the run entirely. If that happens it plays towards the falcons favor IMO, as our pass coverage sets thrive on forcing turnovers when we know passes are coming. Defensively, if carolina get get some 3 and outs and/or turnovers then expect to see the falcons get at least 30 points in this game. Its a race to the 30 point mark imo

additional points

-carolina's pass rush is getting there, they need to keep it up. however, it doesn't seem to be phasing Ryan TOO much. Ryan playing well under durress. Watch Tyson Clabo the RT, he is getting abused.

-Time of possession heavily in atlanta's favor, if that continues how many possessions will carolina get in this 2nd half? maybe 4 drives at this pace and that might not be enough

    • I have considered free agency.  LT?  Either not good enough or too expensive.  Besides, this is a good OT draft.  (I would rather have a free agent, mind you, but the Panthers' reality suggests we can't do it without neglecting other positions).  What LTs are available in free agency, and what do you expect to pay?  Any Ickey-level OT is going to cost over $20m.   How much do we already have invested in our OL?  I get your point, but I do not think you can spend over $100m per on your OL. We have 2 guards and a right T who pull in about $75m per season.  We don't have a center yet.  Teams just don't let good LTs hit free agency, and when one does on rare occasion, he is expensive.  If you want a third of the Panther cap going to 5 Offensive Linemen, free agency is the way to go.  We still need S, ILB, Edge, WR, etc. I think we'd need more than Nijman--and I would understand if we went free agent for a T--but that is putting a TON of your cap at OL--so considering our situation, I do not see that option as preferable.  You may disagree. If I was not talking LT on our line and thinking about the cap, I would agree 100%.
    • Will be interesting to see how they come out tonight. The Boston game seemed to open the flood gates of media attention. And it’s not just that they’re playing well, in some instances they are getting compared with all time greats. This is still a young team, and it would be easy for an immature team to lose some focus, buy into their own hype, and think they can coast bit. The Heat are a middle of the road team without their leading scorer. There is no big dragon to slay, no big statement to make. I think we’ll learn a lot tonight: are they young but mature, or do they still have a ways to go mentally?
    • Panthers North for the win. Good luck to him. Great guy, hated to see him leave here, but he's about to work with the best QB he's ever worked with (at least on a regular basis).
