Well Garry Williams' injury is the reason we signed Hangman. He was slated to start till he got hurt.

 

Exactly. I don't think we lose anything by changing guards. Hangman was not very good last year. He was cut from the Bills because he couldn't run block. We can still pick up someone later and only lose practice time to "gel as a unit" if Williams can't cut it.

After this season, we are on the other side of the bonus money of Williams, Beason, Goddfrey, and Gross. Pretty much anyone on the roster besides Stewart. If we cut them, we gain cap space as opposed to losing it. This offseason we didn't have that luxury with virtually anyone, and we still managed to generate cap room with restructures with no leverage. This offseason was as bad as it gets, and it still wasn't very bad.

Sort of. Godfrey won't ever see that money,0% chance but I doubt we cut beason to save 2 million an still have 8.5 million in dead money. I suppose we could June 1 cut him and save 6 million in 2014 and 3 million in 2015, but that's just a lot of dead money...I think beason will be here in 2014 barring a reinjury or Blackburn or Klein looking awesome this year. After that he'd have to take a ridiculous paycut to remain with us.

Williams will absolutely not be cut since his contract restructure. His base salary is extremely low while his guaranteed money is the majority of his contract. Williams will play out his career here in 2014 and 2015 and then he'll be gone. Keeping him only cost us 1.7 million more per year over cutting him.

Gross' contract is funny. I don't see how they can keep him next year unless he agrees to play for vet minimum which is silly. He's already guaranteed five million next year without a base salary so I just don't see it working.

I think Gross retires or he has said he will rework the deal to come back. Beason and Goddfrey now are put in a postion of taking pay cuts or getting cut when before that was not a possibilty because cutting them would only put us further from being cap solvent.

 

We can also rework Charles Johnson's deal at that point and guys like Dwan Edwards and Mike Tolbert will either rework or be cut. Factor that in with the Salary Cap's supposed balloning over the next few years, and I think this year was as bad as it gets cap wise.

Good points, but I think next year is as bad as it gets cap wise. CJ won't take a paycut and we have no leverage to make him do so. He was all but gone to ATL when Hurney threw dollars bills at him. I don't think throwing problems toward the future by restructuring him works either.

 

Dwan has a 2mil cap hit with only 700k guaranteed, but maybe he takes a slight cut or gets cut, a lot of that will depend on Kawaan Short, IMO.

 

Tolbert shouldn't take a paycut. He's underrated but he;s also getting over 3 mil next year and hardly any is guaranteed. Still, he took a paycut to come play with us instead, he'd make more money somewhere else but he's such a good weapon it would hurt us to lose him. I'd rather carry him for now and when we release Deangelo after our money towards our backfield won't look so bad.

I don't think we can change his guaranteed money....he will already count 5mil against the cap whether he plays or not. That money is already in his pocket but counts against the 2014 cap. I don't think it can be changed. Vet minimum for him is close to 1mil I believe. Do you think he plays an entire season for that, or makes 18% less to sit out the whole year?

To be honest, I don't know enough about an auto-termination clause in a contract to know if you can change it after it's put in. I assumed it was added as a wink-nod agreement between Gross and the Panthers to do something with it later (I.E. retire before it triggers, or remove it before it triggers with some sort of extension). I, frankly, just never understood the point of the auto-termination on either side and figured something else was going on behind the scenes.

 

As far as the contracts of the other guys go:

Dwan, as you said, can be cut for some savings and could be redundant if Kawann "Too" Short plays well.

 

I'd say a paycut could be coming for Johnson. You might be able to talk him into believing that lopping a million or two per season off his deal a year still gets him more money than he'd see in a down market (we can cut him after this season for a cap savings of almost 3 million.

 

I agree with what you said about Tolbert, but at some point we are just going to have to face facts and realize that we can't make the talent equal production at runningback amongst so many players; it's just too hard to spread the ball correctly, and we'll have to take the hit and cut somebody. But yeah, Deangelo is the most likely amongst them, like you said.

 

The situation is kind of sticky going forward, and hard decisions and negotiations have to be made, but we aren't backed into a corner as badly as we were this season. The only cap danger going forward would be the extensions of Cam, Hardy, Lafell, and eventually Kuechly not working out. Which is always a possibility.
