Second half defensive adjustments

Gonzalez had one catch for four yards in the second half.

What changed?

The Panthers wouldn't reveal the details of their second-half scheme, but whatever they did, it worked.

"We know how good of a player Tony Gonzalez is. He's been great for a long time. We knew what kind of a challenge we had coming in. In the first half he played well," linebacker

Thomas Davisicon-article-link.gif said.

"We did a great job of limiting what Tony was able to gain in the second half. Credit goes to our coaches. They made some adjustments and we, as players, were able to execute."

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan credited the Panthers for mixing up coverages to help contain his go-to target.

"They made some adjustments," Ryan said. "They got into some different coverages in the second half and kind of catered it around what Tony was doing."

I was surprised to see TG silent in the second half. I thought he was tired but apprently, he was taken out of the game cerebrally, without having to mug him on every snap. Brains win again.

    • Nina King continues to run circles around the rest of college basketball. She's been ahead of the curve on everything, and is the biggest reason for Duke's success post-K IMO. I think Scheyer is great at many things, but Duke went into the NIL era 100% ready whereas everyone else was playing catchup.
    • Happy they won convincingly instead of letting them hang around. Montreal is cooked, and rather than play hockey, they've decided to take some really cheap shots at guys. I get a player may feel a need to set the tone, and I understand how that works. But to 2-hand cross check someone intentionally in the face, to have a guy down on the ice and put his head into the ice with a stick, to just start punching anyone who gets within arm's reach- that's not setting the tone. That is nothing short of playing dirty.  That said, the Canes.... oh boy. They could have run this score to 6-0 with half a power play. It's embarrassing how bad the PP is. If the Canes go to the Cup finals against a team who scores at least 1 goal per game on the PP, they'll lose the close games because of the lack of results on the PP.
