Carolina-Chuck's 2014 Mock Off-season V2.0

So far this season I have only done "one" mock draft/off-season thread. Thank God. I was planning to wait til the end of the season to do my second mock, but I couldn't help it after watching us get blown apart on Sunday night. Well, here it goes:

Free Agency:

- Greg Hardy DE, Carolina Panthers [top priority]

- Mike Mitchell FS, Carolina Panthers

- Jordan Gross LT, Carolina Panthers

- Travelle Wharton RG, Carolina Panthers

- Ted Ginn WR, Carolina Panthers

- Graham Gano K, Carolina Panthers

- "Charles Tillman" CB, Chicago Bears

I love Alterraun Verner, but I believe that he will be the top paid CB during the off-season. Some people have brought up Tillman's name on here, and it would be a great idea. Make perfect sense, since Tillman have played under Rivera in the past. Even though, Tillman is aging he was still playing at a pretty high level this season before he was injured. Could be have at cheap and would be an instant upgrade in the secondary.

Cuts:

- DeAngelo Williams or Jonathan Stewart RB

Cut whoever will hit our cap the least, but Stew would make more sense now since tearing his MCL. The man just cannot stay healthy. If we're lucky, maybe Stew will just hang it up after this season and save us some money.

- Charles Godfrey FS

No Need to Bring Back:

- Captain Munnerlyn CB

Shown game after game that he can be beaten in coverage.

- Brandon LaFell WR

Shown year after year that he is inconsistent. LaFell have improved a great deal since his rookie season, but I think he has reach his max. Nothing excited here to look at, and for the last time LaFell is not Moose2.0.

2014 NFL Mock Draft v2.0

(1) Jordan Matthews WR, Vanderbilt  6'3" 205lbs
JordanMatthews1_zps0a8acae3.jpg

When will this team give Cam Newton his weapons? The answer is now (2014). Hurney had constantly ignored certain positions on this team for years (DT/WR). Gettleman have solved one (DT) so far with Star and Short this past draft. Now, it's time to give Newton a legitimate receiver to groom with toward the future.

I debated with myself for days now between Matthews and Kelvin Benjamin. Benjamin exploded this season with Winston at helm with 14 tds this season, but I'm still not sold on him yet. I'm going to go with the kid who have done it consistently for the last three seasons, and the cousin of Jerry Rice. Matthews have caught 107 balls for 1334 yard and 5 tds in 2013 for another very good season.

(2) La'el Collins OT, LSU  6'5" 315lbs
LaelCollins2_zpsa5c5cb58.jpg

Crossing my fingers that Collins is available here. He may be too intriguing for a team to draft him in the top half of the 2nd round. Never know tho since this is a pretty deep class of OL. Teams may not have to reach for guys like this past draft in April. If he's not available, I would go with James Hurst or Seantrel Henderson at this spot. Another guy that 'could' be here is Brandon Scherff.

Collins has very good size standing at 6'5 and 315 lbs. A very powerful run blocker and effective pass protector for Mettenberger at LSU. Collins would be an instant upgrade at RT over Bell next season, and the future blindside blocker for Cam.

(#70 LT)

(3) Jarvis Landry WR, LSU 6'0" 195lbs
JarvisLandry4_zps003b9d22.jpg

Gettleman preached about having "touchdown scorers" kind of guys the first day in Charlotte. Jarvis Landry says "hello". The kid has 10 touchdowns for the season with a receiving average of 15.6. Landry doesnt just catch tds, he's a physical downfield blocker. Jarvis Landry will be a fine compliment to Jordan Matthews toward the future. Cam's smile just got even BIGGER. :)

(4) Deion Belue CB, Alabama 5'11" 183lbs

A Nick Saban coached defensive back. Belue is a very physical corner and does well in attacking the run game. Good added depth to the needy corner position of ours. Would rather have "Antone Exum" if he is to be available here tho.

(5) Bene Benwikere CB, San Jose State  5'11" 192lbs
BeneBenwikere3_zps563dc04c.jpg

One of my favorite player in this draft. Benwikere is a very underrated corner. The senior have picked off QBs five times this season. He could come in and instantly take over the slot for Munnerlyn. Benwikere possess natural hips in coverage and is an aggressive run tackler, but doesn't have the ideal speed.

(6. via Giants)  Silas Redd RB, USC  5'9" 200lbs
SilasRedd1_zps215be714.jpg

Dwill and Stew have been disappointments for some time now. One of them will not be back. Beside Cam, Tolbert is our 2nd best runner. Barner just doesn't look like he's capable of being a NFL running back right now. Silas Redd have been plagued by a knee injury this season, but could provide us with depth for next season if healthy.

(6) Safety / QB / DE

Honestly would love us to draft an athletic TE in the later rounds. Heck won't even mind one in the 2nd.

Not too much beef here as I like most of the players drafted. A bit too early to really critique.

Yea, it's too early to predict anything.

And Id like to have a TE but I think it's really time that we start to give Cam real weapons at the WR position. It's time for us to surround Cam with players on the outside.

i wouldnt be upset with this, with Collins and Landry being my favorite picks by far.im doing one in January and thought about having Collins as my 2nd rounder and Landry as my 3rd.

I love Landry. The kid is also a damn good blocker downfield. He kinda remind me of Victor Cruz.

I wanted to put Moncrief there in the 3rd round but I really think that he will be gone by our pick. Thought of Odell Beckham Jr., but I think many teams are going to fall in love with his speed and being able to stretch the field.

If we could give Cam, Matthew/Benjamin and Landry our offense would explode. Matthews/Benj on the outside with Landry running the slot would compliment each other well.

La'el Collins is a stud. The man was playing LG last season for the Tigers, and now playing like a future NFL LT. Imo, we have to or should go with a receiver in the 1st. I believe that this draft is deep enough at OL (OT/OG) that could push one of the better OT like Collins into the late 2nd round where we will be picking.

    • Umm yeah. When did he get it done at the right time? I seem to remember a 4-6 finish and needing Atlanta to win our way into the playoffs but whatever.
    • I mean....no lies detected. See above. We have traded a fortune to draft a guy #1 overall that people have lowered standards for to the point that not playing like Jimmy Clausen and looking like a poor man's Kyle Allen occasionally is worthy of a contract extension making him one of the highest paid QB's in the league. That is cope on steroids.
    • summary: "let's talk about your draft, what did you think about Freeling" Dan:   guys with a huge upside, can come in and compete to start.  High ceiling "he does what for your offense?" Dan:   it's hard to find left tackles, guys that big and athletic.  We have Icky coming off an injury, we signed Walker, I believe your offensive line can never be too strong.  If we're going to win the game, it's gotta be up front on both sides of the ball, so we make a point of emphasis on making both sides of the front as strong as possible. "how many mocks did you see Monro falling to you." Not many times, left tackles are gonna go a lot earlier than when we took him.  We want to add the best player, in free agency or the draft"  that's our philosophy, to get the best players possible. "Hunter and Brazzell." Dan:  we followed the board.  Lee we felt very highly of him , super strong.  Brazzel so flexible and loose, can open the verticle.  Will Lee we held in high regard. "you take a look at your receiver room, Coker, my goodness, your offensive rookie of the year in Tet.  Lost Rico, but there is Jonathan Brooks. " Brooks coming off two knee injuries, he worked his way back, looking great, fully healthy, will help in pass and run game.  Icky, not sure when he's coming back but we're excited about both "plan on extending Bryce" we'll keep talking, will keep internally.  We believe in him, has such a great grasp of Canales and offense, has improved every year. "he's clearly come back from the benching, the arrow is trending up, where does he feel" Bryce knows where we stand with him, when and if a deal gets done, he knows we feel great with him, we'll get something done at the right time. "if this a prove it situation?" everyone in the building has to prove it, has to earn it. Tmac was everything we wanted, his work ethic, he's so big and talented, but he puts the work in, and is a great teammate. "your level of expectation, the building's level of expectation for 2026 "our goal is to win the division every year, we know we have to earn it.  we have to put the work in every day, proving it on the practice field, and our  guys know that." "schedule" we haven't opened at home in 2 or 3 years.  We love prime time games, hope we get some "
