Re: Defensive Tackle-Draft is NOT the way to go

We'll do what we always do. What we actually should do IMO. Fill all the holes as best we possibly can in free agency given the limited talent pool and our limited budget. Pick the guys we have evaluated as the best football players on draft day. I don't think the first pick should be narrowed to less than 4 positions. DT, DE, CB, OL, WR, QB <-examples of the pick we could make for the right guy. I just don't want us reaching for marginal or iffy talent in the first or second rounds because it's a need. IMO that increases the bust factor far more than staying away from any particular position.

Great point.

The reason our last few drafts have been so good, is simply because we have actively plugged all holes with veterans before the draft, allowing us to pick the BPA. So many teams reached in the first round last season, Sam Baker (projected early second), Duane Brown (projected mid second), Felix Jones (projected early second), Aqib Talib (projected early second), Joe Flacco (projected early second). That all happened because teams set their stall on picking a position in the first round as they had a hole in their roster, so when the run on them happened they selected the next best one...even if they were lower round talent.

With the distinct lack of first round DT talent I can easily see teams reaching for this position so we really would be much best addressing this position in free agency and then if a stud falls to us we can draft him and let them battle it out in camp.

For the first time in a while our drafts have resulted in a TON of first and second round talent throughout our drafts simply because we have our rosters filled and pick up the positions that were over looked as teams reached in other positions.

DT in free agency for me and then keep our fingers crossed.

Of course you want to draft a guy at DT in the first day of the draft. First round?? Depends on if we get a first round choice, who is available, and what other needs we have to fill. If for example we get a pick in the first round for Peppers and there is a fantastic DE prospect available we might go for that if there are a number of DTs still available in the second.

Each year it seems there is a run on some positions. Last year it was offensive tackles which is why we moved up to get Otah. It is all about cost versus value in the first day.

While we are at it I would like us to sign a few free agent DTs, and DEs as well. Last year we did a great job of signing offensive line guys like Fonoti and Brown and Vincent who were cheap, had a good opportunity to try and make the team and although we only kept Vincent, we had plenty of choices. I think we need to take the same approach this year on the defense side of the line.

Lot of free agency between now and the draft.

Add in that what happens with Peppers will logically have a major impact on our draft plans.

Last I checked, we don't even have a first rounder.

I'm not going to count on one being there, until we actually have one.

That being said, there is talent out there, both in the draft, and FA. Lots can happen between now and then to completely change things.

You're amusing.

amusing? No. I'm just passionate and aware of where we're going and what we should do to make the future a little bit brighter.
